Dcflyn Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 I'm refurbishing my '66 M20E. Do you have suggestions on where to buy a new set of restraints? Also, should I go with the standard shoulder straps or upgrade to retractable? Thanks, David Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
MB65E Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 Alpha aviation on eBay has the best turn key solution on belts. Shoulder harness a must! Also dig a bit as we did, found inertia reels and lap belts for a too good of deal on eBay as well. Good luck! Matt Quote
NotarPilot Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 I replaced mine with Alpha Aviation lap and shoulder belts for the front and lap only for the rear as should harnesses are not offered for the rear. I didn't have shoulder belts for my plane before so I'm glad I got them. I went with manual adjustable belts instead of the inertia reel as I didn't like the bulkiness of the reel housing. In all the four sets set me back about $700. I did the work myself and had an IA sign it off for a nominal fee, after he inspected it. They are real easy to replace. And I believe part 43 appendix D allows you to replace them as preventative maintenance if you choose to go that route. Quote
Guest Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 When I restored my E model, I put shoulder belts from Alpha Aviation in all four positions. While there is no STC for the rear I had to fabricate my own mounting brackets from .090" 4130 steel. The installation worked out fine and is stronger than the crew positions. Clarence Quote
flyboy0681 Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 I had the Alpha inertial reels installed and while they do look funky, they work quite well. The reason I had them installed is that I sit with the seat all the way forward and cranked up high and the factory shoulder harness was positioned so that it was always rubbing my neck. Those days are now over with the Alpha's. Quote
chrisk Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 I replaced my adjustable shoulder belts with inertial reels. The inertial reels are definitely the way to go. They are comfortable enough to wear all the time and fit snugger than you would ever want an adjustable shoulder belt. I have no data to back it up, but they have to be safer, if for no other reason than you would wear them more often. Quote

They did mine and they look great. Quote
Dcflyn Posted January 14, 2014 Author Report Posted January 14, 2014 Thanks for all replies. Very helpful. I suspect my partner and I will go with the inertial reels. $200 more than standard and perhaps a bit safer. Cheers! David http://n2690w.blogspot.com/ Quote
