De-Iced

I was wonder why I have never seen De-ice boots on a Mooney. I would guess TKS would probably work better but still seems like the boots would be an easier install than TKS and if it would work why dont we see it?

The only de-ice option on a mooney is TKS. You can get a non-FIKI install on the J and early K models. Later K models and up (L,M,R,S) can get a certified FIKI install. Expect 40k to install the non certified and 55k to install the certified setup.

I suspect it is the laminar airfoil, but I'm not sure. Would also likely need a more robust air pump, at least on the older birds.

I talked to TKS last month and the price at that time was $49K for inadvertent and $59k for full FIKI. He mentioned that it had to do with the time to custom make all the panels now rather then doing a multitude at the same time when there were more orders for our specific planes.

Personally I have an idea that it may also be liability as well as them being a single source and making a better profit.

At those prices, you would be better off selling your current Mooney to someone who doesn't need FIKI capability and buying a plane with TKS already installed.

I feel the same way as you but the owners selling their TKS planes are going to be asking more also. \
