  1. I did practice them two weeks ago under the hood. In Canada we have a requirement to have a backup system in case of a failure of the primary equipment. In my case, it is a Narco with glide slope so I could shoot an ILS, Localizer or VOR approach if my GPS goes berserk. During my IFR flight test 4 years ago, the Cessna rental I used had a GPS failure just as we started the enroute phase. We lost all satellites. I reverted back to VOR navigation with the backup system and this took care of showing equipment failure proficiency #1. A week later, I was informed that the GPS antenna connector had failed on us. Another reason to ensure you are proficient with ground based equipment such as VOR would be localized EMI issue or system wide events that could prevent satellite reception. Something as simple as an electrical issue could also knock off the unit. Yves
  2. There is a lock feature for the IFR plates. It would be nice to have it for maps too. I would send the support for Foreflight an email requesting this... these guys are eager to please. Yves
  3. My best settings is 23 squared when I want to go fast and keep the fuel flow reasonable (8.5 gallons per hour). Yves
  4. And to make you feel happy Ned, we finally got spring weather here today and yesterday. Forecast for tomorrow: snow showers! Yves
  5. Thanks Marauder, I contacted a local Avionics shop today and he will look for it on Monday. I wanted to play with this this week-end however this will have to wait. Yves
  6. Still need this. Sent a private message. Yves
  7. This is on my wish list... fly to the Bahamas with a couple of other Mooney fellows. Could do some formation flight for sure if they are trained. Yves
  8. He is on his way: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/CFSWR Yves
  9. With the re-inforcement of the cockpit doors (triggered by 9-11 I think), the power that be have contributed to this recent event. How can we prevent this scenario from happening again? Have a private washroom in the cockpit? Have 3 people in the cockpit with a minimum of 2 at all times so they can watch each other? For anything they change, there will always be some advantages and drawbacks. Bad guys will always manage to benefit from these changes. Yves
  10. Does not look like they cover Canada? We are stuck with Nav Canada here and have to pay them through Foreflight. Yves
  11. The MK12D + TSO has some edges connectors, not DB types. I will post a picture tonight Thanks. Yves
  12. I need to bench test such a unit. Anyone has this info? I think it is different than the MK12D (non plus) version. Thanks for any help. Yves
  13. I think we are due for a St-Lawrence river area get together. I want to meet you both whenever possible. Too bad the Mohawks don't have an airport in between the two jurisdictions. Wherever we do this, some will have to cross the border and deal with the pitfalls. Yves
  14. There is a gathering planned for MooneySpacers at Oshkosh on Monday 6PM at the Mooney Caravan tent. Here is the schedule: http://www.mooneycaravan.com/2014-schedule Yves
  15. I was supposed to go fly this morning, formation practice with Ned. Once I got to the airport, I knew conditions would be rough with the winds in the area... cancelled it all and went shopping instead. Your report Erik confirms I made the right choice. Yves
  16. What is the Chineese equivalent of the $100 oops... $200 hamburger? Yves
  17. If it is on your route, I recommend KBGD, Borger Texas for fuel or stopover. This was the best FBO we had for our California trip a year ago. If you go please say hi to Tracy! But this place has not much tourist appeal except for those who like oil wells! Sorry Elton but we still need the snow shovels here. Was -27 C this morning early. I am fed-up! Yves
  18. From my past experience, there is not much to worry about unless the OAT is below -25 C. I recall one flight when it was -30C. Some dials were erratic the first few minutes but settled quickly. I did not have a GPS then. If you don't have steam gages like I do, check the manufacturer specs, they will provide operating temperatures. Yves (Now at -15 C)
  19. My friend's Venture is N/A and he cruizes around 220 knots. We calculated both our miles per gallon rates on a napkin at the last local get together piLots breakfast and he does slightly better than me! Yves
  20. And I almost forgot to say: The Mooney Caravan schedule is out and there is a MooneySpace gathering planned on Monday July 20th at 6 PM... Lets hope that many from here can make it... Yves
  21. Lacee, I believe we could have ONE flight of non-Mooney airplanes... The Cirrus, Clarence with his strong machine and another friend who might join who will possibly do formation training with us here..... his machine is actually faster than any Mooney I know.... a Questair Venture. I already asked about this to the power that be... and awaiting an answer. Yves
  22. If they don't have an approach for the equipment you have I do not think you are legal to start an approach unless you can do a visual approach. I think this is equivalent to flying IFR to an airport without any approach: the expectation is that you will cancel IFR at some point above MOCA however there are many factors to consider: What if you have to go missed, what if you have a comm failure... Lets see what the experts say... I am not too experienced IFR and Canada rules are a bit different... Yves
  23. Jeez Mike I was wondering how come you are almost never here anymore... with the pictures now I know what you are up to! Yves
