  1. Thanks Mark for the feedback. In my case I will get the aircraft a new paint after this and other stuff is done and with the new paint scheme, I prefer the look with the cowl closure. If I would do all I want before the paint it would be a completely new airplane but budget has a hard limit. I am also looking at replacing the spinner with a polished one. If anyone would know where I could get a second hand polished spinner for a Hartzell 2 blades (M20C, 180HP) I would definitely investigate. Regards, Yves C-FQKM
  2. Good day all, I am asking my local maintenance shop to quote on installing this on my M20C 1965. LASAR quotes about 5 hours of labor on this. Is this realistic? It would be nice if some people who went through this could share their expereince with me. From what I can see, this seems to be strightforward but it is hard to say without seeing the STC. Any risks that this would become a hog moneywise? Regards Yves C-FQKM
  3. Very nice job! How much did they give you for your 430? Was it a WAAS? I am on the market to get a used 430W or 530W to install in my 65C but find the prices way too high in all cases so I am still waiting... Yves C-FQKM
  4. Would anyone have any clue on the cost of dynamic prop balancing? Yves from Ottawa C-FQKM
  5. about: Precise assembly of hub and blade components complete the overhaul. Blade angles are set for the aircraft, and the assembly is statically balanced. The assembly is now ready for installation on the aircraft. What is the difference between statically balanced and dynamically balanced? Would shop doing overhaul usually provide the dynamic option? In Canada prop overhaul are mandatory every 1500 hours or 10 years. Mine will be due within a few years and I want to learn more about this process before going through this. Regards, Yves in Ottawa C-FQKM
  6. I found a left over 1 1/4 (or 1 1/2) inch white pipe from a central vacuum installation I did years back, cut a 3 foot section, open it on half the length (similar to DaV8or suggestion) ... it worked like a charm. Since this pipe is a bit flexible, I did slide in under the filter without problem and without the need of a bracket to hold it in place. Oil and filer are changed so the case it closed. Thanks again
  7. Thanks for the feedback all on opening the cowling and ways not to mess it up!. SPecifically DaV8or and AmigOne. I will make some tools before I do this taks... possibly tomorrow. Regards, Yves from Ottawa C-FQKM
  8. Hi guys, I will do my first oil change soon on a recently acquired 65 M20C. Any tricks would be welcome on how to prevent doing an oil mess when I remove the oil filter? I have taken out the side cowling to view where it is and it seems to be kind of difficult to access. Regards, Yves from Ottawa C-FQKM
  9. An image is worth 1000 words... http://www.rfc.ca/data/pdf/Pilot%20Resources/Aircraft%20Operations%20Rockcliffe_Mar%202012.pdf And be warned of the new CYRs (Restricted Airspace) over the parliament and the Prime Minister residence. (CYR537 and CYR538). They recently raised the top to 3000 feet. Old maps might depict the previous height which was much lower. Yves
  10. N9453, please re-read the rule again and look at what I put in bold: 602.61 (1) Subject to subsection (2), no person shall operate an aircraft over land unless there is carried on board survival equipment, sufficient for the survival on the ground of each person on board, given the geographical area, the season of the year and anticipated seasonal climatic variations, that provides the means for (a) starting a fire; ( providing shelter; © providing or purifying water; and (d) visually signalling distress. (2) Subsection (1) does not apply in respect of (a) a balloon, a glider, a hang glider, a gyroplane or an ultra-light aeroplane; ( an aircraft that is operated within 25 nautical miles of the aerodrome of departure and that has the capability of radiocommunication with a surface-based radio station for the duration of the flight; © a multi-engined aircraft that is operated south of 66o 30' north latitude (i) in IFR flight within controlled airspace, or (ii) along designated air routes; (d) an aircraft that is operated by an air operator, where the aircraft is equipped with equipment specified in the air operator's company operations manual, but not with the equipment required by subsection (1); or (e) an aircraft that is operated in a geographical area where and at a time of year when the survival of the persons on board is not jeopardized. _________________________ So unless you plan to fly at a higher latitude, you don't need survival gear. I don't know of any local flyers carying such items. Yves from Canada
