Thoughts on Mooney M20F Exec 201 Project
1964-M20E replied to MooneyPitts's topic in General Mooney Talk
as Doc said make sure you know what you are getting to and enjoy the ride. I like to see someone tackle an under used, neglected plane and bring it back to life. If you have them post some photos it always helps with the advice. -
I've never heard anything on guard that I can recall other than an ELT. Now 123.45 yes lots of comms between aircraft.

Your opinion please: which airport to keep your baby at.
1964-M20E replied to Eduleo's topic in General Mooney Talk
Closest airport to your home unless economics are seriously of wack. The airport 10 minutes from my house is 4 times as expensive for tie down as where I keep the plane and I own the hangar at my airport. However, there have been many flights coming home and I see the closer airport and fly over it to my airport and think gee I can be home much quicker if I was landing there. -
if you do decide to get it overhauled you might consider finding a serviceable hub that eliminates the eddie current inspections or another method that will eliminate the inspections. @Cody Stallings Talk to Cody Stallings. He is good.

Good brief. I think the QT guy uses the opposite argument that the constant counter energy to cancel the noise is more damaging to your ears. I do not know one way or the other. I do know that my PPL training was done without any type of hearing protection I spent too many weddings sitting in front of the band, too many shooting sessions, too many hours cutting 10 -15 lawns a week, too many times grinding and beating on steel, and too many hours riding down the highway windows down and stereo blaring all without hearing or eye protection. You know cool people don't wear that stuff. What did you say I didn't hear you?

337 Maybe not?? I'm not an IA but wouldn't this be a minor mod and log book entry by an A&P? I think that it is. Minor mods don't need 337 correct? I'm not sure how it all works but couldn't you also go under the added safety route as well like shoulder belts, AOA and other items?

M20E Replacing Landing Light
1964-M20E replied to someairforcedude's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
you may be able to get vice grips on the back side with the side cowling cover removed. If all else fails you can always remove the lower cowling and access them from thr back side. -
If you are asking about glide distance on an engine out scenario then pulling the prop (blue) knob all the way out does increase your glide ratio. Go out an practice engine out and pull the knob you can feel the difference.

Around 2012 I was departing after a Superbowl. I am based at a small grass strip but ATC kept me at 3000 for about 40 miles and way south of New Orleans before they cleared me to 110. KNEW does get quite hectic during a big sporting event like final 4 or super bowl usually 36L - 18R is the only active runway all other hard surfaces are used for parking.

Engine and prop OH issues, solutions and shop PIREP
1964-M20E replied to 1964-M20E's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
A freight truck will carry your props anywhere you want. Besides he's in the middle side of the country. -
This year I did a field OH on a spare IO-360A1A engine. I was able to work with the mechanic and complete the OH turning the wrenches myself. The existing engine on my plane was leaking more and more oil and was becoming an issue. It was time. I installed the engine and completed the initial test flight in early June. Everything was fine until August when I was returning home from Florida. The prop became unresponsive and would not control engine RPM. I was running 14” MP to keep from over speeding the engine. I only had about 31 hours on the engine and prop at this point. I drained the oil checked the finger screen and the oil filter and both were clean. I suspected the governor, a PCU-5000, installed last year about 130 hours) and removed it. During the OH I sent the governor to APS for IRAN so that it would be back to factory standards when I started with my new engine. After removing the governor I sent it back APS and they were great. They did not find anything wrong with the governor and only charged me shipping and it was a quick turnaround. I then proceeded to do a pressure test on the prop and found the issue. The prop was hydraulicly locked. I pulled the grease fitting revealed engine oil in the hub. When doing the OH I sent the prop to Stallings Propeller for IRAN. I removed the prop and again sent it to Cody Stallings. Upon disassembly and inspection Cody suspected there was an issue with the piston since the O-ring was fine. Cody installed a serviceable newer style piston, tested the prop and sent it back to me quickly. Cody was absolutely great. Even though I offered he would not charge me for the piston, shipping or dressing out one of the blades that had damage caused by my packaging. I reinstalled the prop, did a test flight and everything went well. Again thanks to APS and Stallings for standing behind their work.

No change in RPM or OilP when cycling prop
1964-M20E replied to JamesMooney's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
@FlyingCanuck Did you ever figure out what happened? I recently had mine hydraulicly lock. That is oil on both sides of the piston. Pull the grease fittings to see if there is motor oil in the hub. If so that's your problem. Supposedly this is a very rare occurrence. -
If I had the means I would buy it and make the M20X. You could do it as a short 2 seat, long 4 seat or an extra long big hauler. All capable of using 310HP, full aerobatics and even a tail dragger version. Oh we I do dream from time to time.

How many categories do you fly?
1964-M20E replied to RobertGary1's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Helicopter and airplane for me. Thinking about gliders, but closest pale is 1:45 Mooney flight away so wouldn't really keep it up once I had it. -
I was taught the same that you need to plan 45 minutes after reaching your alternate for the conditions at the time of takeoff. Once you are in the air your destination or alternate are flexible to meet the current conditions you are experiencing in the air. You should always be evaluating the situation and updating you plan. That is why ADSB weather or XM weather is so great today. You can easily look an hour or two hours ahead of your current location and update you plan accordingly.

@Danb Flight line first is a good place to go. Wendy is real nice. At this time I can't recommend going anywhere downtown New Orleans however, Metairie area Gangnam Korean BBQ restaurant, I haven’t been here but it sounds good. I did a Korean BBQ in Korea years ago and enjoyed it. Drago's in Metairie (this is the original place) has the best charbroiled oysters in the area A short drive across the river in Gretna on Friday nights they have concerts in October (local bands, Amanda Shaw on 10-22 she’s good with original music) on the river beginning at 6pm. Get there ealry street parking can be a challange. Free and open with plenty of restaurants to eat at before or after. All are right there within a few blocks on Huey P. Long Ave. Grab a beer from anywhere and walk to the concert. River Shack is right there by the river. Sit outside and the concerts make nice background music. Gattuso’s The Depot El Gato Negre Amore Bakery, sweets Bucktown area in Metairie Deanie’s seafood Mr. Ed’s Seafood R&O Restaurant

Got a call from FSDO Today…
1964-M20E replied to ilovecornfields's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
When I first got my ADSB out installed I received a letter from the FAA contemplated ignoring it but called. Turned out there was some setting that was off. When talking to the guy he said it was good that I called and I explained it may take some time to get it corrected and he was that's OK we know you are working the issue. -
From what I understand the lower gear doors will make it harder to retract the gear in models with manual gear. All I know is once you start keep the gear moving in one clean motion.

Only if the plane is on jacks, but to each his own.
