Got a pic of what you have, Brian? Best regards, -a-

@GEE-BEE that is interesting... Ti tubing... Forever exhausts for a forever plane..? Got any more details for that? I have forgotten most of what I knew about Ti machining... The flex mod is a bit lower for Ti... Not sure how that could affect an exhaust system... Got any details to go with that? How that gets approval for use with the TBM? A lighter exhaust system on a Mooney could add some value... Best regards, -a-

Go with as much detail as you have, Minne... The more the better... But, if you don’t have it... somebody will have to work as hard as you did to finish... Some MSers have tremendous other skills... Makes it fun to hang out here... -a-

Stig, See if you can update your avatar data... Less confusion if you have a model and N#... Editing the avatar is much easier on a larger screen... I use an iPad for that... Best regards, -a-

Corrosion Behind Foam Replacement Insulation
carusoam replied to AerostarDriver's topic in General Mooney Talk
@AerostarDriver... Check out this thread... Jeph has made some friends in aviation in Japan... I found a Japanese pilot flying a Mooney on YouTube... Jeph was in Japan looking for something to do... Next thing we know... Jeph is flying in Japan with the Mooney guy from YouTube... How small is the Mooney world? -a- -
If not specifically called out to toss out... They can stay... What they do... is remove noise that gets induced into the electric system... Typical noise from an alternator can be whine and other rpm dependent sounds that can be heard coming through your audio panel... If you are getting no whine or other odd sounds in your audio... they seam to be working as expected... Lets see if @bmcconnaha is around... he is in the avionics business... he might know... or know somebody who knows... PP thoughts only, not a mechanic... Best regards, -a-

I think splatter is the right term for this... Looks like an external leak is getting the oil blasted towards the intake tube... Some is landing on the cooling fin above, lots o drops are hitting the tube... All of it is heading down with gravity... Start with all the obvious spots to begin with... Like the oil fill tube seal... That’s too big to be a challenging leak... Wash clean, apply the foot powder/spray deodorant... PP thoughts only, good luck with the hunt. Best regards, -a-

A combination of air and the hardware part, the snubber... dampens the vibrations caused by the fuel pump... Which are probably occurring at 2X 2700 rpm... about 90 per second... so fast, the needle won’t be able to show that frequency of vibrations... If the snubber is full of fuel, it becomes ineffective... Check the parts manual for details on the snubber... some get mounted directly to the back of the gauge... If using a high end JPI... one gets added externally... PP thoughts only... -a-

The guy with the most experience in these things is Paul Maxwell... Give Paul a shout... @pMaxwell Best regards, -a-

Reading the label... there are boxes where one should get a check Mark... Unfortunately, I don’t see one... Searching through the web... AK-950 Surprise... everything made by Ameriking shares the same ID... https://www.yumpu.com/en/document/read/34145537/installation-and-operation-manual-model-ak-950-ameri-kingcom I can see where/how they ran into challenges with this one... RFI filter... (probably) Annuciator panel with the same ID numbers... (really odd...) They had one label that went on everything...(?). Looks like somebody at the factory called in sick that day... the person with the sharpie... Best regards, -a-

De humidifiers use this method... But, it’s a pretty small amount of air going through the system this way... It may work... It may not work... Do you want to experiment..? Do you want to use a known solution? My engine has a lot of surface area... Driving a small amount of air through the engine, would work up to a point... You would have to test a bunch of variables... How cold does your hangar get? How windy does your hangar get? How are you paying for electricity? The known pre-heating equipment takes all the fun out experimentation... I wouldn’t want to put an unknown heat source into the oil... Too hot, the oil can easily degrade... Really too hot, the oil can light on fire... What controls the temp of the heating element, while it is on? Expect a home made device to easily heat up past the heat of degradation for the oil... without much effort... past the heat of combustion of oil in an air environment... PP thoughts only, not a mechanic... Best regards, -a-

I believe I did the swap with the KT74... https://www.bendixking.com/en/products/nc/navigation-and-communication/kt-74 Out with the dials and knobs of the Kt76.... in with the buttons... For fun... check out the pic in the BK website... They use a phony reflection in the pic... and screw that up too... Only BK... -a-

Technology Today vs the 1960 Mooney Design
carusoam replied to cliffy's topic in General Mooney Talk
So... Single data point... My 95 LT1 has 180kmi on it... If it was run continuously at 60mph... that would be 1,300 hours... It spent a few days doing 1/4 mil runs... But, with a 6sp... it was loping around 1600rpm... Full torque is provided about 4500 rpm... Its biggest challenge was the optispark distributor... a wear item with a MBTF of about 50kmi... probably a touch more, but not much more... I ran it to failure each time... it had a back-up system, and a secondary ignition program to go with it... run it that way too long, that cat gets filled... It is currently on holiday... the last mechanic to work on it broke some exhaust bolts... and went out of business the next day... So... If you have a spare LS3... I have a great test bed for it... L98, LT1, LT4, LT5, LS1, LS2, LS3... (there are a few engines between mine and the LS3) -a- -
Technology Today vs the 1960 Mooney Design

GM likes to test some of their vehicles around Nurburgring... Corvette and Cadillac... full speed, and 24 hours... That was record setting and good enough for their sales brochures... As for spark plug failures... I have one. I posted pics of it a year or so ago... The ceramic insulator broke free and was moving around... up an down the center terminal... It was held in place by a hoop shaped outer terminal... The spark was strong enough, it came out the bottom of the center terminal... Only the computer knew there was something wrong with it... until my mechanic pulled it out... It was a brand new plug, manufacturing defect... As for modern car engines in experimental planes... Find the Raptor project... Audi Diesel engine... the plane is currently flying... Plenty of heat challenges... coolant, oil, and every seal the engine and ‘re-drive’ have in them... The re-drive has a pair of belts delivering power... Plane T/O speed is around 85kias... That is kinda fast for an off-field experience... Best regards, -a- -
Erik-ing never fails to operate properly... I once saw a pharma company fail to operate properly... the FDA took notice... To allow production of their products, they had to follow a long legal procedure known as... Consent Decree... A complete review and update of how they operate, and the QC system that goes with it... overseen by an agreed upon third party consultant... It took a couple of years and hundreds of millions to get out from under the mess they created for themselves... They became lean and mean, and inevitably sold themselves to a better management group... Sooo... if you ever find yourself saying we have always done it this way... we know better, because we have been in the business for decades... these are subtle hints that time may have passed you by... you just told yourself, and the person you were talking to... Best regards, -a-
-
KHYA, KOWD Both have MSC in their history... I haven’t been to either in a decade... Haven’t lived there in several decades... Best regards, -a-

Of all the Maxwells... Paul visits here often... @Pmaxwell (OH of fuel selector valves, question) Best regards, -a-

There was a period of time when Ameriking failed to operate properly... A company that couldn’t provide documents the way the FAA had approved... So... if your equipment is before the cut-off date... the company was still in compliance... After the date... the equipment might be OK, but the company was unable to prove it... PP thoughts only, not a compliance engineer... Best regards, -a-

Remove vernatherm just to make sure it is working... Sounds like it isn’t... It goes in a pot of water... with a thermometer... See what temp the water is, when Verna activates... For extra credit... see what temp she closes up again... Our vernatherms have specs if not sure... PP thoughts only... Best regards, -a-

Lessons in laminar flow....release pee an inch away from the paint, it will stay an inch away.... Washing the belly... as often as you like... there is an oily surface there already... To find the source of the oily surface... check the case vent tube supplied by Lycoming... -a-

I think mine had the same problem... The easy solution was buy something from the reaper... @Alan Fox I got a digital upgrade, push buttons, and pressure (?) altitude display... And it works with my ADSB out rebroadcast... Best regards, -a-

Speaking of used... @Alan Fox @Jerry Pressley @SheryLoewen -a-

Was an oil filter an option on Mooney’s?

Key words... oil screen, and safety wire... -a- -
Experiment away with a pair of eyeball vents and a sheet metal box... PP thoughts only, check in with your mechanic... Best regards, -a-

Hyannis and Norwood have been Mooney friendly places to go in the past... Not much help, but may get you started... Best regards, -a-
