  1. A 1,700' runway is way below my personal minimums for my 1974 Mooney C. If you are not precise on speed a Mooney can float. Most Mooney pilots I speak with like at least 2,000' or 2,500' for minimums. In reality I generally use less than half of my 3,000' runway, but I like the margin for safety. For the I like a long wide runway. It probably stems from starting my flight training at Baltimore in the 1980's. Good luck!
  2. Is it safe to assume a push/pull rod failure is much less likely than a cable failure? When i review an incident like this I think how likely is this to happen in a Mooney and how can I address the emergency.
  3. Windwood Resort in Davis, WV may be a good one to look at. My wife and I just bought a cabin in Terra Alta, WV about a 35 minute drive from 2G4 Garrett County Regional. Good luck! Wise to plan ahead. We keep our plane at KEZF Shannon in Fredericksburg, VA.
  4. I see you are in Gathersburg. Chesapeake Ranch Estates in Calver County, Southern MD has a paved runway and Kentmorr Airpark is on Kent Island has what looks like a nice turf field. Are you looking for something in the Mid-Atlantic area? Some other community airstrips are gone Castle Marina and Aqualand in Newburg, MD.
  5. Mooney merchandise can be purchased on the Mooney website mooney.com (shop tab) for excellent prices and helps to support our brand. Here is the link to the hooded sweatshirts for men Mooney - Mooney Speed Shop Fans - Apparel-Men Hoodies/Sweats (merchorders.com).
  6. It looks like I have the same problem - leaking compass during flight. I noticed a wire feeding the compass which I assume is for lighting. Can that be removed from the compass end. It looks like reasonable prices from Aircraft Spruce for new replacement. My only concern is mounting it to match my existing for my 1974 Mooney C model. Any additional advice is appreciated.
  7. Wow! This is the best thread ever. I enjoyed seeing my model year represented 1974 with original advertising, pricing and performance specifications. It is great to see what these magnificent machines looked like new.
  8. It's happened to me before as well. I had someone on the ground verify me gear was down and cross checked it with indicator lights and football on the floor. I now pay extra attention to it during my preflight. I put mine on jacks and cycled the gear afterwards with my A&P. No damage done and I got a valuable lesson. While on jacks lowered my gear manually to get the feel of it in advance of an emergency. As others have said it all falls to the pilot for responsibility to verify before flight.
  9. Electric gear on a 1966 E, was that an option or upgrade from the Johnson Bar? Nice plane! It should sell quickly.
  10. I use a mechanic creepers and creeper and sump while I am still in the hanger. Not too bad, at least no wind and dry.
  11. Anthem, welcome aboard. I live in Southern MD, Newburg and own a 1974 C. I keep my plane at Shannon Fredericksburg, VA, where a hangar was available, fuel is reasonable, transition training was on field and not a far drive from my house. Please post pictures of your new plane and if needed I recommend finding an experienced Mooney Pilot for transition training. There are a few good ones nearby. Good luck with the purchase and pre-buy.
  12. I did the same thing about a year ago. I left the master switch on for the first time after years of flying. My advice is the same as others, leave strobe on and you will see it as you walk away from the plane or leave it in the hangar. In my case, I had to replace my battery.
  13. What is the value of missing logs? As a rule of thumb, I always figured 50% of the aircraft value.
  14. Jerry sorry to see that happen to you and Brent and the other good folks in Morristown. I wouldn't expect much of a market for stolen Garmin's without yellow tags. Pat
  15. I used Vantage Plane Plastics. It took some minor edging, but looks great. I attached a before an after. The after includes an Avidyne and new ADSB Transponder. I also replaced the cracked plastic cover over my power quadrant.

  17. I know it's tough to get across the country for a flight, but airfare's are cheap and I strongly suggest you fly the plane first even if it from the right seat. Best of luck with your purchase!
  18. Sorry to hear this. Some of the best and safest pilots I have flown with have been older. Have you been able to check rates for a 182? I used to fly a 1980 182RG, nice plane, but I always wanted a Mooney and finally got mine two years ago. Best of luck!
  19. I am seeing high time 1970's 172's for up to $150K and they are selling. I don't know why as a group Mooney Spacer's argue the value down of our aircraft. For the money their is no better value out there than a used Mooney. I don't understand the difference in price from a 172 to a Mooney C or E. Before everyone responds I get supply and demand and that it is even worse for Cessna 310's. Here is a picture of my C.
  20. Big undertaking, but you are considering all of the right things and bring solid mechanical skills with you. Best of luck and post picture! Enjoy!
  21. Great looking Ovation! Enjoy
  22. Congratulations and enjoy! Great looking plane, I bought a 1974 C 2 years ago and love it.
  23. Congratulations! Great looking plane, I love it. Enjoy and fly safe.
  24. An JPI EDM is on the top of my improvement list and I plan to get one soon. Still deciding which one to get whether I should step up to primary or not.
