  1. I find that with my J, if I land with the flaps in the takeoff position rather than full flaps, that trim will be approximately in the right spot for the go. With full flaps on approach, trim is much more nose up. So if I am going to do a touch and go, I will set the flaps to the takeoff position for landing and then the only thing I do after touchdown is to add full power. Especially in a single pilot situation, to land with full flaps and have to reset the flaps and the trim while rolling down the runway is a bit much. Having said all this, the only time I'll do a touch and go is if I need night takeoffs and landings for currency and the runway is long enough.
  2. I'm a controller and this is absolutely true.
  3. Clarence and Ryan are both great guys! I feel fortunate to have them as my mechanics!
  4. Was the flight that scared her, her first flight with you, or did she have positive experiences before that? It may help if she has some positive memories from before that flight. Fortunately for me, my wife was always on board with me flying and owning an airplane. She enjoyed flying with me and had done many 600-1,000nm trips. Then two years ago on a trip to the east coast, due to stress from external events (she'd had a frivolous lawsuit filed against her) she had multiple panic attacks in the airplane. We were awaiting the judge's decision - he dismissed the lawsuit - so her panic was not about flying, but her brain made an association between the panic attacks and being in the airplane. Despite having over 300 hours of flying with me, she couldn't get back in the airplane, she took a commercial flight home from that vacation. Thankfully, knowing logically that she enjoyed flying and the adventures we'd had together, she decided that she needed to get over her fear of being in the airplane. So last month she decided that she needed exposure therapy. She accepted that at first she would have panic attacks, but that that was ok. We flew almost everyday, starting out with circuits, and gradually moving farther away from home. We flew IFR again yesterday for the first time in two years. On the climb out, I looked over and she was busy on her phone, completely unconcerned, back to routine for her. When we broke out on top of the cloud deck, she looked at it in wonder and said "I've missed this". So, if she has some positive experiences to think back on, maybe there is hope. It may take time, patience and understanding. I wish you the best of luck!
  5. @PJClark as someone else mentioned, I doubt that Canada will have the border with the US open to non-essential travel by September. But whenever you are able to come visit, send me a message ahead of time, if I'm at work I'll be sure to give you first class service through the terminal area. As for the border crossings, they aren't a big deal, I've done it many times. I've often cleared US Customs in Dayton, sounds like that would be convenient for you. If you have any questions about the border crossing procedures just send me a message and I'd be happy to help.
  6. That's my friend's airplane, it is beautiful and it has been maintained by the Doc so you know it's in tip top shape.
  7. Great idea, I have a lot of worn out drum sticks lying around. I don't know why I don't throw them out, they just collect in a pile next to my kit.
  8. Very sad news! I met Bob a few times at the Mooney Summits, unfortunately I never got to have a conversation with him, I wish that I had. I've always valued his input here on Mooneyspace. He will be missed!
  9. I had a Lynx 9000+ installed last fall. It had worked perfectly until last week when this issue began. (I'm the friend Kevin is referring to). I contacted my avionics shop to report what was happening and they have received identical reports from 4 other aircraft. They forwarded this to L3 in case this is an issue with the Lynx. They've been looking into it and believe that it is a malfunctioning ads-b ground station. Hopefully this will get resolved soon because it is very distracting/annoying when you get aural traffic alerts every 10-20 seconds. Unfortunately the Lynx has no means of turning off aural alerts, you can only hit the mute button when an alert occurs. I believe that it may in fact be a malfunctioning ground station in the Buffalo/Niagara area, I did one flight last week where the alerts suddenly stopped as I was flying away from that area (about 60nm away) and they resumed in almost the same spot on the return flight home.
  10. Mike, was that at all the far North airports you've visited? I've been to a lot of Canadian airports and never had that experience.
  11. Strava is a great name for the dog of a cyclist!
  12. Yup, that's me. We flew together to the Mooney Summit in 2018, that episode is in the pipeline, hopefully he'll get it out soon.
  13. Controllers are individuals just like everyone else. Some enjoy the job more than others. Some units have seen their traffic dwindle more than others. Some units may be in a worse staffing situation than others. I can't speak for others, but I know that I've been very bored at work lately, our traffic is down about 90% from the same time last year. I, as well as many of my colleagues have enjoyed accommodating pilot requests, letting pilots do things that wouldn't normally be possible. I can't wait for things to get back to normal so that I can work busy traffic again because that's what I enjoy doing. For now, every bit of traffic I can get helps pass the time and pilot requests for unusual things just gives me something else to do. If you fly through my airspace, request away!
  14. One of my favourite "local" flights is flying over Long Point in Lake Erie.
  15. Transport Canada has done this with medicals. Not sure about annuals etc.
  16. Flying over the Kitchener/Waterloo Ontario airport this afternoon; sad to see 13 B737's parked indefinitely due to COVID-19. If you know where to look, the Doc's shop is visible in the picture.
  17. I'm enjoying the final π/100 th of Pi Day with a Scotch that is suited to an established gentleman aviator. Cheers!
  18. Maybe a dumb question, but do you have the yellow arc on your tach (only with the McCauley prop I believe). Mine has a yellow arc from 1500-1950 rpm, if in that range there is a vibration.
  19. I would guess that ~ 30-40% of my hours each year are x-country trips >500nm. The rest are short, local flights: keeping my ifr current, meeting friends for lunch, taking people for rides etc. I wish more of my flights were x-country, but I end up needing to do the short flights to keep the airplane from sitting unused for too long at a time.
  20. I worked him into Buttonville once, couldn't believe that he'd made it from Victoria non-stop. Also couldn't imagine why he'd want to do that non-stop!
  21. I always like it when my reasons for not going materialize, it helps make me feel good about my no-go decision. But many times it hasn't and while I may feel a bit disappointed, I always remind myself that I'd rather be on the ground wishing that I was flying, than flying wishing I was on the ground. Always feel good about deciding not to go! Steve
  22. I "saved" some money today by flying to an airport a half hour away that has less expensive gas.
  23. My 1990 J in front of the Doc's shop.
