I've had the strobe light switch cover break on a less than 5 hr old Ultra ovation once. Stacey gave me a few of them I sent along with the new owner. I think Paul Maxwell uses these switches on his new panel installations and may have a few covers. You might try giving them a call

A reused tube runs the risk of a fold from being prestretched from previous use when reinstalling. When that happens, a flat follows shortly, usually away from your jacks and toolbox when there is a foot of snow or its over 95 deg. How do I know this?

Kerrville crash, two lost..
mike_elliott replied to Eight8Victor's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
If anyone has the surviving spouses contact info, please forward it to me. Also, if anyone knows the surviving spouse info for : 12/31/21 N6796N Arizona City, Az Randy K. Donnarumma or 6/10/22 N305L Rocket Camarillo, CA Dr. Jacob We would greatly appreciate that info. In doing this since 2014, I have noticed a trend, and it confirms what the FAA has said about those that attend safety events and seminars. While not making general assumptions about pilot error, it only stands to reason that while we gladly spend 3K on our panel for additional safety and skimp on the most important system of the plane, the pilot, our accident and incident record could more reflect that of military and commercial if we trained more rigorously and effectively. /soapbox mode off- 78 replies

4/20/22 Message from Jonny/Service Center
mike_elliott replied to Jonny's topic in General Mooney Talk
@Jonny Consider the Mooney Summit to donate a base annual inspection to help us assist downed Mooney Pilot's families. Good will goes miles for the price of Mikes time for a day or 2 and brings Mooney back into the support fold. Some lucky owner would gladly bid on this fantastic silent auction donation and undoubtedly would be a service center customer for life after they experience what Mike and Kevin can do. I hope the crew behind the curtain gives this request serious thought as I am sure it will pay soft sell dividends for Mooney both fiscally and culturally -
Mooney down, no injuries Ocala
mike_elliott replied to Eight8Victor's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
While getting insurance for flying is getting pricey without question, one well known client pilot was telling me getting homeowners insurance because of the "(Insert pronouns here) live there" by gawkers for their house and has been refused by a couple of the major carriers not wanting to accept the risks because of a google search on them. So far, my age has only interfered with being added to one clients' policy, but I am sure as I get older like Don, that will accelerate. The thing that makes no sense to me is that I am also on a few other policies with the same carrier. This pilot is over 80 so that may have something to do with it/ Maybe they take the average of the cockpit -
Mooney Factory Annual Inspection
mike_elliott replied to FAST FLIGHT OPTIONS LLC's topic in General Mooney Talk
I just flew a plane today that has been having regular maintenance done by MIke at the factory. The owner is exceptionally happy with the service and quality he has received. -

Discounted registration ends June 30th!
mike_elliott replied to Rick Junkin's topic in Mooney Summit
Anything the Mooney Community can do to help us help the Mooney Community is truly appreciated. Early registration really helps us in planning how much of everything we need so the event will exceed everyone's' expectations once again. (I did check into getting TOP GUN MAVERICK to show at the Tampa Theater, but that was a non starter as a first run film...darn, would have been a nice surprise for our community) We are open to suggestions if our registered attendees want a film shown after the presentations and if so, what would you like to see? No guarantees, but wanted the dialog out there to make this an even more memorable Summit. -
Yes Don, it will do data recording with an SD card installed in the mfd. I know the NTSB are all over data recording instrumentation in GA accidents with JPI and Garmin Data and if anything survived, it would have been mentioned. I am surprised it was not mentioned that it was unrecoverable, actually. What we do know is something caused the engine to act up, and only 3 things it could be air, fuel or spark, and of those components, most likely 2 of the 3 systems were damaged beyond the ability to test integrity from the resultant fire. From speaking in person with the gent, Tom Hunnicut, who pulled Mark from the plane, Mark had the plane on the ground then pulled up to avoid hitting an innocent in a car then hit the poles and the plane then caught fire. Edit: on reflection, all 3 could have been compromised. If the intake system failed, losing boosted air and thus causing extreme rich and flooding with the low boost on in addition to all the other speculations. I am sure non of this has escaped scrutiny of the NTSB, Continental, or Mooney.
-
with 2 of the three components replaced that allow an engine to run, it would be very difficult to point to anything as a cause of the engine shut down. While vapor lock cannot be eliminated from this causal list, anything to do with spark or fuel cannot either, as the certainty of mags and fuel pump were damaged beyond use from the fire and were replaced on the otherwise functioning block to run a test. RIP Mark

With the autobidder software, you can sell it to me directly, avoiding Duke or whomever you have in your part of Florida that is pushing their lobbyist to pass HB1024. (In a nutshell, power companys give you .25 for what they charge you 1.0 for vs the 1-1 currently) Batteries work during the day also as a source of electricity Thinking of them as a nighttime source is not thinking of how they can assist the Dukes, Florida Power etc avoid the huge cost of peaker plants. Heck, we have a power plant up at Crystal river we are paying for on every months bill that hasnt produced a KW of juice and never will. Lith Iron batteries are well suited for this purpose with the durn near unlimited discharge cycles and dont require all that Yep you would need a way to store excess energy to sell to others, and right now, batteries are it. Using the high energy batteries that cars require might be counter productive because of the charge/discharge impact. Otherwise, why wouldn't FEMA just have the big guy mandate all school busses be electric and use those for insta power when needed for hurricanes? (Still not a bad concept if using the right battery chemistry) Anyway, lets see what Mary Bara, you know, the leader, has as a competing product
-
it's better than that, anyone with energy storage can participate as a mini utility. Peaker plants cost a huge amount to build, maintain, operate, staff and spin up, where this concept is truly distributed https://www.tesla.com/support/energy/tesla-software/autobidder
-
Tesla's autobidder software coupled with this rule change will allow homeowners and other producers to enter the energy market without the need for energy companies to "process" the transaction. The ROI from the Hornsdale system and communities participating has been less than a year in Australia I hear, while providing the Aussies a much needed stabilization. I think this will be huge in the future. The ability to spin up additional capacity instantly when needed is a biggie with low capex to boot
-
Tesla has filed a rule change for grid operators in Texas to bring households with solar panels and batteries into the state's energy market. Broad public participation should help the power operator stabilize the state's power grid. https://t.co/BKqUQPHS98

Its been a few years since I have been back, but EYE is the GA of choice for the race, 2r2 is a bit out of the way and HFY should have room if EYE doesnt. Incidentally, a Mooney Acclaim owner came in 5th today in the Pro2000 race, and a bravo owner bought up the rear of those still running in that race. Tomorrow at 9:10A they go again. #LetsgoReece I might be there for Indy, Parker..more later. Make time to go to the museum and look up my brother bob.. He is a walking encyclopedia of that joint
