jkenney Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 Hi all, I flew from Montgomery Field (San Diego) to Torrance, CA today. I filed Direct MZB V23 SLI Direct KTOA, a pretty simple flight plan by Southern California airspace standards. The clearance I was given was a left turn to 270, radar vectors Oceanside, then "N-3 TAC Routing San Diego" Direct KTOA. I told the controller I was unfamiliar with this terminology so he read me the full clearance, which was the same as what I filed originally Anyone here familiar with this clearance and if so, where do I find the description of what this terminology means? Thanks in advance! Quote
Super Dave Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 Did you maybe hear TEC (tower en route control) instead of TAC? Quote

Thanks in advance! Looks like Tower enroute control. TEC for departing following San Diego area airports CRQ MYF NFG NKX NRS NZY SAN to any of LA airports such as FUL LGB SNA SLI TOA LAX. The SAN N3 route is OCN V23 SLI (missing is MZB, so intercept V23 without going to MZB). More here http://imageserver.fltplan.com/legends/TEC_SW.pdf Quote
Marauder Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 It looks like he did get a TEC routing (SANN3). If he was up at 10k probably would have gotten SANN4. Quote
WardHolbrook Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 I was based in the San Diego area for 5 years prior to moving to Santa Barbara. It was a TEC route and they're SOP in this part of the world. For future reference, here's a link to the FAA database... http://www.fly.faa.gov/rmt/nfdc_preferred_routes_database.jsp I also suggest that you visit FlightAware.com and/or Fltplan.com when you're planning IFR flights. You can easily find out what routings ATC is using between just about any airport pair. That sure takes the surprise out of what you get when you contact clearance delivery. Quote
jkenney Posted May 26, 2013 Author Report Posted May 26, 2013 Thanks for the replies. Definitely was TEC, sounded like TAC to my unfamiliar ears. I have flown from KCRQ to KTOA numerous times and they always gave me the full route clearance. Same with Gillespie. Quote
ToddDPT Posted May 27, 2013 Report Posted May 27, 2013 Fltplan.com is the best for filing. They'll send you an email about 30 minutes before departure telling you your assigned route. It takes the guesswork out of CRAFT. Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2 Quote
thinwing Posted June 4, 2013 Report Posted June 4, 2013 Ditto with flightplan.com...routing issued by text message 30 min before departure...but you did correct procedure...just tell them to read the full clearance if you dont have text.. Quote
kmyfm20s Posted June 5, 2013 Report Posted June 5, 2013 They have a handful of new tower controllers at KMYF at the moment. Between the student pilots and a few of the tower controllers it can be interesting at times. I am sure you probably heard what you thought but what they intended to say was "SANN 3 TEC Direct KTOA" as said above. Quote
