Every now and then you will find a bargain on eBay but you need to check often. Quote
N601RX Posted December 15, 2012 Report Posted December 15, 2012 Agree. Its absured to see one that is 5 years old sell for $250 less than a new one. For a month or so after the 750's came out I saw several sell for $5500-$6000. Then the crept back up to over $7000. Also with Garmins flat rate repair, if there is anything at all wrong or goes wrong with it you suddenly have more than a new one in it. Not enough reward for the risk on my opinion Quote
Piloto Posted December 15, 2012 Report Posted December 15, 2012 When you consider the options (GTN 650/750) $7K is not too bad. I got a G530AW for 8K and I am happy with it. The GTN-750 was twice the price and too big for the panel space available. It works very well and love how well it controls the auto pilot on LPV approaches. Mine has the 16W TX but it measured 20W on the bench. Now the corp jets and the airlines don't block me when I talk. I may consider the IFD-540 for later upgrade if I get that juicy stimulus check from Santa Obama this Xmas. José Quote

Garmin is a consumer electronics company and my biggest fear is that they would go down that path. They certainly did it with the portables. Quote

When you look at your plane a significant number of the components are out of production with no warranty. José Quote
Piloto Posted December 17, 2012 Report Posted December 17, 2012 Umm, because a new Piper Arrow, which cruises at 137 KTAS and lists for 415K, is inferior to my '78 J, which cruises at 157 KTAS and was 65K in 2006. If I could have purchased a new 201 in 2006 for a 27% premium over my used price I would have. Jim Yeah but what good is it a plane that can not fly because there is no factory parts to replace your broken one. The examples above shows a reality common in aviation. The fact is that there will be someone taking advantage of the situation and fabricating or fixing these obsolete components, like the KX-170. There is nothing mysterious about someone providing support to the G430/530 specially when there are more than 50,000 of them in the field. I got my 20 year old Trimble TNL 2000A recently fix by a non-Trimble shop. José Quote

There are many used equipment posts on this board for prices that are very close to either factory refurbished, or factory new....coming with warranty, the latest DB, and updated system software. Marauder Posted December 17, 2012 Report Posted December 17, 2012 I think a few things are keeping the price up; No competition, so if don't buy a used 430 or a new 650, what do you buy? People are willing to spend $7k for a used box so they don't need to spend $9k+ on a new box. If another manufacturer made a new box that sold for $7k, what do you think would happen to the 430 prices? Support at this point is not an issue. Garmin received a lot of pressure to keep the support of the 430/530 from fleet operators. Garmin stepped back from a "discontinued" approach to a limited availability and continued support until part available becomes an issue. Supply & Demand 101: the used equipment that is coming up for sale are from mostly from upgrades. They pop up and sell for what the market will bear. My only concern with buying a used Garmin product is the length of time they will support the platform. I have gone through a number of Garmin portables dating all the way back to the 55. Granted they are portables, but they weren't cheap. I kept migrating from one to the next because of features and because Garmin stopped providing database updates or support on them. The panel mounted stuff I hope will be supported much longer. Time will tell. Quote

The black and white portable 196 went on for at least a decade while the color 296 and 396 both got shelved after the 496 arrived. I know in the portfolio of electronic products we sell over time, we will run trade-in programs to help drive getting really old difficult to support products out of the market. I'm curious if they made engineering changes to these products over time that perhaps have new style boards introduced and they are willing to pay that kind of money to get back a 12 year old product either for parts to support equally as old products or just to get them out of the market. It's a lot of money for a trade-in. Quote

I heard that the shop resold my 12 year old unit for $5,800 the same day that it came out of my plane . I just don't understand the decision making process that would lead an individual to pay $5,800 for a 12 year old unit when the avionics shop would have sold them a factory new one for $7,595. The avionics shop also resold my 327 and 340 right after they were removed from the plane. I am just glad that there are some individuals in the market who are willing to buy used avionics at what I consider very high prices. Without them, I would have never gotten $5,000 trade-in credit for my old 430 and similarly high trade-in credits for my 327 and 340. Ah, that explains it. I was wondering why Garmin would have cut such a deal. Well, I have an answer for you on why someone would buy at $5,800 instead of new... A $1,000 savings believe it or not will influence a lot of people's decision. Since you kept the rack, the buyer will also need to buy the rack and the GPS antennae. But even if they put another $500 into that, they saved (at least in their mind), $1,200. Strange, but if you are on a tight budget, people make these kinds of decisions. I'm the kind of pilot that would rather save up for something new, but others don't view it that way. When I upgraded my AP I got a lot of requests for my old stuff, even though it was 23 years old at that time. Quote
