keithmiller Posted August 5, 2012 Report Posted August 5, 2012 my 07 ovation 3 is just 35 hours out of its annual and has 1005 hrs on the engine. flying to longview texas and back this week (about 2 hrs) i have noticed a slight oil film on the windshield. its alos been 3 hrs since my last oil change. Any ideas of the cause before i call Dugosh? Quote
The-sky-captain Posted August 5, 2012 Report Posted August 5, 2012 Keith- Take a look at the prop seals. I had the same oil film issue several years ago and it turned out my seals were leaking. At the time I had over 1100 hours on the prop and ended up overhauling it at Foster's in Oklahoma. Quote
jetdriven Posted August 5, 2012 Report Posted August 5, 2012 Or the front crankshaft seal. On a 201, the air comes out of the gap between the cowl and spinner, taking the oil with it to the windshield. Quote
KSMooniac Posted August 6, 2012 Report Posted August 6, 2012 Actually, it could be leaking nearly anywhere on the top of the engine too. Â I had a seep at the top/back of my case, and it migrated all the way forward and out of the cowl inlets enough to put a mist on the windscreen. Quote
AmigOne Posted August 6, 2012 Report Posted August 6, 2012 In my Mooney I had oil on the w/s and it was from the prop seals. The prop was due for an o/h and after it was done the issue dissapeared. In a Centurion I was ferrying we thought it was coming from the cshaft seal and it ended up coming from the oil pressure sender (in front of the case) improperly tightened after the installation of a new EDM730.  Different engines and airplanes but I mention it just in case. jnisley Posted August 6, 2012 Report Posted August 6, 2012 I know your engine is different then mine...... the leak that forced me to do an emergency landing less then a year ago came from a cracked flare fitting on the steel prop governor oil line. It started out as a mist but quickly became something much worse. (four quarts of oil in 15 minutes) Quote
keithmiller Posted August 6, 2012 Author Report Posted August 6, 2012 thanks for your posting , will be removing the top cowling this weekend for a look around per dugosh recommendation and having them check it out next week. Quote

jnisley Posted August 6, 2012 Report Posted August 6, 2012 Needless to say I'm flying a well oiled Mooney! There's still oil seeping out of cracks and crevasses, especially on warm days. Quote
