Just had a charging system failure yesterday 30 mins into a cross county flight. I wonder if the cold temps hastened the generator’s failure, I preheated but the airplane was a cold soaked 12° when I started. Don’t recall the temps at 9,500 when it failed. It’s a terrible time to work on airplanes in an uninsulated hangar. Funny as I had an issue Saturday that forced me back to the field after takeoff when I noticed the battery volts was flashing at me on my JPI700. Alternator was working but not charging the battery. Got back on the ground and found the annunciator panel breaker was popped, pushed it back in and battery started taking a charge again. Flew 3 more hours and no other issues.

I’ll check it out this weekend. I’ve already order a replacement. If it’s not needed, I will keep it as a spare.
TangoTango Posted Wednesday at 10:38 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 10:38 PM I voted no, but I guess I should be in the yes column now: On Saturday as I turned on the landing light on a visual approach, the annunciator started flashing and the ammeter pegged to the discharge. Turns out the field wire worked its way loose. Luckily an easy fix.
natdm Posted Thursday at 01:32 AM Report Posted Thursday at 01:32 AM Flew through Canada to Alaska. First flight after landing in Alaska, coupler died. Voted yes.
Falcon Man Posted Thursday at 01:49 AM Report Posted Thursday at 01:49 AM Three alternator failures in M20 K's - one the belt driven alternator tension bracket broke and the alternator shifted, broke wires and caused an electrical system failure - over a known airport, put gear down with hand cable system. The second one was due to an accessory case gear that sheared - third the alternator coupler failed. Current K has dual alternators!
