RoundTwo Posted June 20 Report Posted June 20 For those of you who have installed a Skytec starter for the Prestolite starter on a J, what value did you use for the distance from the datum for you W&B calculation? I’m getting -24.5” and would like to compare that to others. I’ll admit to not finding the actual balance point of the starter before installing it, and I’m surely not going to remove it just to figure that out now. TIA Chuck Quote

Since it’s rather long, it could be +/- 4” or so, depending on where the person picks to be the CG of the starter. Quote
Paul Thomas Posted June 20 Report Posted June 20 (edited) -24.5 is what the manual has: Electrical Equipment 301. Alternators (a) Alternator, 60 amp, Prestolite, ALY8420, ALY8403, ALY6420 or ALY8420M (S/N 24-0001 thru 24-2999) 10.3 lbs. -24.5 (b) Alternator, 70 amp, Prestolite, ALU6421-LS (S/N 24-3000 and on) 10.3 lbs. -24.5 Edited June 20 by Paul Thomas Quote

Scottknoll Posted June 21 Report Posted June 21 I thought the question was about the starter? That document is the FAA TCDS (Type certificate data sheet). It lists the original prestoline/prestolite starter as Flight Station (F.S.) -23.0 Quote

Scottknoll Posted June 21 Report Posted June 21 Directly from the FAA:https://drs.faa.gov/browse/excelExternalWindow/6EA0F05ECCA8304486258305006833CF.0001The TCDS is for ALL M20 aircraft (Type Certificate 2A3), so you’ll have to scroll down to the J model.FAA moved all their stuff to DRS:https://drs.faa.gov/browseAirworthiness Directives, etc. Quote

kortopates Posted Saturday at 09:07 PM Report Posted Saturday at 09:07 PM You should check the equipment list in your POH in the weight and balance section. it’s much more thorough than the TCDS.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1 Quote
