I am sure the executives of ForeFlight are looking at Jeppesen and trying to bring value to their operation. Both are owned by Boeing and Boeing has put Jeppesen up for sale to reduce debt. Only a matter of time before ForeFlight gets put up on the block.

Maybe Tyson and the other founders/investors can just give Boeing back the shares they received in March, 2019 (ouch!), resume their ownership of the business, and call it a lesson learned. That would be a better outcome than if Garmin bought it to bury it.

Boeing management would be ousted over that kind of deal. They have fiduciary responsibilities.

Yes, and the VC’s certainly don’t still have the Boeing stock they received, and the founders probably also sold after a very painful AMT owie. My comment is a sarcastic lament on what was likely a very poor exit for some good people and the obvious risk of Garmin buying it to kill it or combine it with their product. It makes business sense for Garmin, and they certainly have the juice to do it.

Everyone is shoplifting.  I might as well too and at least get some money back from inflation...

Sheesh.

Yes, in large part the system is broken.  BECAUSE society and morality are broken.  Rationalizing a commandment is easy for many.

First, it was a joke.

Second, it's a bit different. Why the insurance companies don't start to randomly audit roof repair claims instead of just raising premiums?

I'm sure that with all the data available today is quite easy to score the likelihood of a roof repair claim being a fraud.

In my neighborhood most, if not the repairs, happened not after a hurricane or storm. So how come that a 10 year roof, without any natural event such as hail or destructive winds needs repair? How comes that it needs to be completely replaced?

It's funny some roof with real damage were repaired rather than completely replaced.

No doubt about it.  Which, if I'm shopping around, is rather expected and an okay trade-off: they get some of my personal data and, hopefully, I get some market information.  I just don't see the need to provide them with their competitor's name as I don't believe it's it my, or other customer's, best interest.

Just be aware of WHAT they collect. I don't use it, but just saw that TikTok collects info on your phone, router, OS and even file names that you have stored . . .

A simple thunderstorm blew an arm-sized branch 18" deep into my roof. I called a local roofer to fix it, he helpfully chalk marked existing hail damage in about a 10x10 area typical of the roof and told me I needed to replace it. Sent a photo to insurance and got a new roof (21 years old).

Note that roof damage deductible is different from the rest of your Homeowners deductible, but is instead 1% the insured value of the house

Likewise, our homeowner’s insurance in Florida tripled in 2023 as all but one name exited the market. Why did they exit? Fraud, mostly, and not hurricanes, which are pretty well baked into the cake by the actuaries.

What it is is fraud, especially roof damage claims filed by criminal roofing contractors who were taking advantage of assignment of benefit agreements being, well, assignable. Inflate the claim, absorb the deductible, and win/win for property owner and contractor. Not so much for the insurance company.

Back in the 90s there were the two big CA earthquakes.  In one of them, the news kept running a clip of an apartment building.   Some 30 units.  Some stupid number of claims by people "living" there.  Like more than 10,000 claims.
