KVB Posted October 31, 2024 Report Posted October 31, 2024 (edited) Hi all, Has anyone had corrosion issues in this area on a m20j ? How do I go about fixing it if it is corrosion? also is there any way to tell if it is corrosion ? these pictures are looking forward where the wheels retract in too Edited October 31, 2024 by KVB Quote
Shadrach Posted October 31, 2024 Report Posted October 31, 2024 Sorry, but those images are lousy. Try reposting some that are in focus. And limited to the specific area in question. Might help to light the area and turn off your phone’s flash. that being said, it looks like there may be a bulge between the spar and the cap. Hard to determine how bad from current images. If it is bulged, the wing will likely need to come apart. $$$ Quote
skykrawler Posted October 31, 2024 Report Posted October 31, 2024 Looks to me like there was a repair. The shop heads on those unpainted rivets look 'uneven.' Does the log book have an entry for a repair or is there a 337 for major repair? Quote
EricJ Posted October 31, 2024 Report Posted October 31, 2024 To answer your question, yes, spar cap issues are not unusual for Mooneys that have been in salt air or other corrosive environments. It can be repaired, but whether it makes economic sense to do so or to find a replacement wing may depend on some details. I agree that the pics aren't great, and having somebody competent inspect it may be able to determine what is happening there. Can't tell much from the pic, but often a bulge like that is a bad sign. 1 Quote

I was going to say the same, is that bulge exfoliation corrosion? I hope it is not that and you can repair it.... I went through this pain shortly after I bought my Mooney, it was a 25k repair... and that was in the aft stub spar, not the main spar. 1 Quote
