Just as an FYI, I went through the ordering process for it just to see what it would cost.  With the top of the line, everything you can get including the Latest Apple Pencil and Apple Care, the total cost was $1206.00.  This included the case they offer as well. Cellular and WiFi.

Just in case any of you were thinking of getting one.  My ipad pro is just fine for me, thanks....

what did you order, i just specc'd the ipad mini 7 with 256gb cellular and it came to 749

if the battery life is better than my mini 6, which is probably impossible that' it's not, i'm real interested

I have been waiting for the new mini to drop as I find my iPad Pro size a bit cumbersome. Just pre-ordered 256 GB wifi and did some fun customization with the engraving.

Any suggestions on the best yoke mount option?

I've been waiting for this one too and am ready to retire my Mini 4.

I've been happy with the MyGoFlight yoke mount and their specific case. John Breda has posted some links recently for some alternative hardware that looks really good too.

Thanks, I just came across John’s post. Will look at MyGoFlight, Ram and other options.
Cheers!

The Pivot case and mount system is good with the mini 6, assuming 7 would be similar. I have it on my list to try their yoke mount next. Currently have the leg strap and many swear by the suction mounts.

Casper recommends the Steelie.

The RAM gear is very solid for a yoke mount, too. Lots of options.

John Breda's use of Manfrotto photo mounts (they make everything imaginable) is a great way to get arbitrary flexibility too...

ETA: you can mix and match to some degree.

Looking at it, I don't see any reason to move from my Mini 6.

I just read an article that pretty much says this... basically the same car, same flaws, but more power.  :)  Many in the tech press can't find a use for a Mini, but for Mooney owners it is the perfect size.  I will very likely get it to replace my 4, but if I had a 6 I'm not sure I would either.  I wish this one got the OLED screen.  I know if I buy the 7, the OLED version will come out next year, though...

Does anyone use the Pencil in the cockpit with any iPad?  I'm not a fan of e-notes and still use a pen and paper, so I'm curious if there are any other nifty uses for the Pencil, in or out of the cockpit.

Same here. Battery life of my Ipad mini 6 is abismal. Also I hope the heat management has improved. My ipad 6 overheats...

I would keep my Mini 6 but I now run ForeFlight and garmin pilot on it so there’s not enough internal storage. I’ll upgrade to the 7. I also have an IPad Pro with cellular but it’s too big and cumbersome. Because I have a G3X and all glass I actually dont use the ipad much at all in flight - it has my POH and manuals on it so I usually connect to avionics so the logs and EIS data will update, send the flight plan to the 750 and then put it in the floor pocket. I use it for charts( very useful) etc and if the 750 or G3X isn’t giving me the flight plan view I want (which is rare). Flight planning is where I use it the most. Anyhow, gonna upgrade because I need the space. Probably disconnect the cellular on my big iPad and get cellular on the mini.

I got a Mini 6 (with more space) several months ago. Downsized from the more powerful iPad Air gen 5 (great, but large).

I do feel the difference (decrease) in speed. Not enough to make me go from the Mini 6 to the 7, but for a new purchaser it may be a pretty meaningful difference (ie. not to buy the older one). It's not crippling, just noticeable in the age of instant responses and rendering. I notice the difference while changing layers in Foreflight, Windy, etc.

I'd add the new Apple Pencil for $130 and a case for $60, but I agree that should do it.

I’ve not moved to a yoke mount as my USB power is on the copilot side. I had a Pro, but when I bought the Mooney it was just too big no matter how I tried to use it. I have my Mini 5 panel mounted on the upper right side above my breakers. I run it landscape as 90% of my use is for traffic & weather (from my Sentry Mini). I have Jepp plates on my Garmin MFD, but I’ll pinch in and check them on the iPad too just to check mins & missed approach procedures. I got the cell version so I don’t lose GPS if my Sentry flakes out or I’m using it in someone else’s aircraft.

The Mini are a niche market - probably 3-5 year olds and Mooney owners lol.

FWIW, I hate writing notes on it. I have CRAFT. papers printed on 1/2 a letter paper and use a pen on a small clipboard. I found my e-notes too sloppy and I also like to write down freq changes as I’m enroute. It’s helped a few times when there’s ground issues to have the last freq in order handy.

I’ll upgrade when mine dies…but I’ve been getting LOTS of years out of Apple stuff lately. I think my phone and iPad are circa 2019 and both perform perfectly. I also don’t have any heat or sun issues, so I don’t want to jinx that either.

I gave in and ordered a 7 last night, 256 gb wifi version.  No pencil yet as I'll probably splurge on the MGF cooling case first as I don't think my older MGF regular case will fit.

The cool thing about the new versions of iPads…

is their use of the latest CPU chips…

apple designs their own chips and has them manufactured by TSMC.

the TSMC chips use the latest tiny transistor designs…

a long way of saying… the chips are faster, more efficient, and run cooler… and take up less space.

As for the pencil… the newest ones work really well and have the ability to read your scribble and turn it into text…

of course, your software has to be written to use it all…

most software gets written for iPads first… then everything else follows…

I use an expensive iPhone, supporting the cheapest iPad purchased at Costco…

a portable SkyRadar supplies WAAS GPS signal.

i have not used the ipencil in anger yet…

PP thoughts only, stuff I read about in tech magazines…

:)

Best regards,

I love the Apple Pencil. I write down any notes with it in Foreflight for ATIS, Clearance, or even just a reminder to check something out after the flight. No longer use any pen or paper. With the Mini6 yoke mounted it’s right there to access without getting in the way of anything.

pencil is pretty useless in the plane, so much faster and easier to write in a notebook.  Now at home when flight planning or putzing it's KINDA useful.

is nice to be able to work on e-forms with it.

oh yeah, kids love using the pencil to draw.

I have the mini 6 with 256gb.  I run both ForeFlight and Garmin Pilot and still have 174gb available.  Can’t imagine filling it for quite sometime.

I also use the Apple Pencil and love it.

Pencil works decently but easy to drop. Consider a wrist strap if you rely on it. I much prefer the small kneeboard with paper. Also can have flip pages with home drome, power settings etc.

IPad is brilliant for charts, though...

Pencil magnets to the iPad or with the RAM iPad mount it has a separate clip for the Apple Pencil.
The Pencil 2 is quite a bit better than the first version. Making sure your thickness settings are correct so you can read it is also key. I think it’s mostly an adaptation thing. I used to always write with pen and paper, but I’ve gotten pretty used to this. Much less clutter. I hate clutter and cables in the cockpit.

If you can still change the order, get the Cellular version, even if you don't put it on a plan.  The Cell version has built in GPS, wifi version does NOT.

I don't feel the need for the cell/gps option, although it is ludicrous that gps doesn't come on the base version like all Android devices.

I have 2 GNS boxes, a 496, my phone, and a GDL393D to keep me from getting lost.

Ok, just pointing out the issue.

And you don't have to use a cell connection with a cell iPad.  For a while, I used mine without a SIM and just used my phone as a wifi hotspot.
