I'll be flying into Destin twice in the upcoming months with my wife and baby and staying a week each time. Are there any nice fly in destinations close by, say 30 minutes or so, that you locals would recommend? Secondly, I'll be there in early to mid May and early July so if any Mooneyspacers are around that area and want to stop by and chat or grab lunch hit me up on my email or via PM. Other than Gulf Shores, AL I have not flown into this part of the country and am looking forward to the new scenery.

Me and my wife like to fly over to Fairhope alabama and spend the afternoon. There is a park right there on the bay. Also there is a pier with a diner on the water.Beautiful area with water oaks and nice ambiance. Its not far at all from destin . My parents live in Orange Beach so it is a short hop over.

Bodie,

If you want fresh shrimp to bring back go to Sexton's.  They are about a mile from the airport.  I usually park at DestinJet.  It is at the north end of the field and is easy in/out.  There is a lot of military activity down there and you will get routed around it.

Call if you're going to be in LIT or SUZ in the near future.  I can give you some tips flying down there as I used to live there.

Dauphin island.  The airport juts out into the bay with water on 3 sides. It's a short walk over to the beach and the local restraint will come pick you up if you call them.

Good recommendations guys, I appreciate it. I'm sure I'll have a lot of time to kill being that I get pretty antsy after lounging on the beach after a few days.

Charley, I'll be down to SUZ on Friday and again on Monday for work so I won't have much time. Next time I'm down over a weekend I'll look you up. Thanks again for hooking me up with a hanger on that stormy weekend a while back.

Hey Bodie,  If you need a pit stop along the way I highly recommend Meridian, MS (KMEI).  Great FBO, cheapest fuel on your route and free hot dogs/chili dogs, ice cream, popcorn, waffles, etc.  If you fly direct you'll practically fly right over it and its a little over half way there.   I know you can make the trip non-stop, but with wife and baby you might need a stop.  I make this trip frequently and always stop either going or coming home to avoid the high fuel prices down on the coast (KDTS - $6.34, KMEI - $4.99, current prices).  There used to just be one FBO at DTS and their prices were astronomical.  They've gotten better now that there is competition.

If you're going to St George it might be worth a stop at Apalachicola for some Apalachicola Bay oysters.

Don't forget to stop by Red Bar in Grayton Beach.  Just remember to bring cash!

Have fun.
