I’m going to be flying into Nashville, Tennessee on December 27 and departing on January 2. I’d like to, if possible, keep my airplane in a hanger. Any suggestions on which airport would be preferred? Also need to rent a car. Thanks for any thoughts and suggestions.

I have enjoyed wonderful experiences at John Tune (KJWN ). The line crew and the service are excellent. I doubt hangar space is an option, but this time of year that shouldn’t be a cause of alarm.

Which fbo?

I think Countour is the only option at Tune.  It's a nice airport with good service.  Fuel is a little expensive but, they've got to pay for the fancy terminal somehow.

Contour is the only option.  BCG is kinder than I am.  From my view, the fuel is more than a little expensive, I’ve never been able to get a hangar and the service has been adequate, but I wouldn’t go so far as good.

There is a car rental company at John Tune. Not one of the national ones, but a local one. Kinda expensive ($100 for a Toyota Camry per day was the cheapest they had), but they’ll bring the car to the plane. Call the FBO and ask for their name and number, I forget their name now.

It was expensive, about $1.20 more than home but, they didn't charge me a ramp or overnight fee for 2 nights, met me at the plane with a golf cart to get my luggage and took me to it in a golf cart in a rain storm when I came back to get more clothes for the unplanned additional night. They had it all fueled up and ready when I showed up to leave and generally made it as easy as it could be.

I could have not taken on any fuel and made it to my next stop, that's often true. One day though, I realized that FBOs provide a lot of "free" amenities like cars, bottled water, sometimes ice or snacks and that I use those as needed. I figure it's kind of uncool for me to use the amenities and not do any business with them so I always buy fuel now, even when it's more than I'm paying at home. Of course, I only hold 48 gallons in my C so worst case, in spending an extra $50 - $70. Usually it's more like $10 - $15 more than I would spend at home. I think using a car for a couple of hours and grabbing a bottle of water is worth $10 - $15, an Uber would cost at least that much.

That's just me though, I want the small FBOs to stay in business, without them a plane becomes a lot less useful.

I agree based upon your experience.  Last two times I was there plane had not been fueled when i arrived.  Have never been met with a golf cart or offered any help.  Polite enough, but have never made any special effort. Most interesting part was seeing Kid Rock’s jet parked on the tarmac.  Unusual to say the least.

I had just missed him leave when I got there. I did fly over his house though, you can't miss it.

I used Tune airport just a few weeks ago.  No complaints.  Folks were nice and had my plane fueled when I arrived.  Gas is expensive  but only needed 20 gallons and I always try to give them some business for the service they provide.  I think they did charge me overnight fee of something like 10 per night but it was more than reasonable.  Busy airport at times but no problem getting in.

Tune is great. It was safer with out the tower. Contour is good. The GM is really nice, probably won’t charge an overnight if you make friends and buy gas. Uber works really well everywhere I’ve needed to go. I’ve made some good friends along the way. Good eats below. I’ve flown there for work the last 10y.

As another data point, I landed Smyrna (KMQY).  It was back 10 years ago.  The FBO is I think what is now called Hollingshead.  I did not request a hangar, but did get good service, including staff walking up to the plane and helping with unloading. YMMV  -dan

I have flown into both airports and they both had good service.  Interesting story.  We flew in there for the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament in I think 2019.  Tune is right on the river, and after the games we arrived for an early Monday morning departure and found 1TF covered in ice from the freezing fog.  After we finally thawed out we departed and just as I was rotating I saw a flock of birds take off from the edge of the runway and they flew under me.  We cruised in severe clear skies and temps of around 10 deg Fahrenheit.

When we landed I found this frozen passenger.

No this is not photoshopped and I am not making this up.

If you are on the socials there is a group called Middle TN Aviation Network where you may be able to find a hangar during those dates.

I am based at Smyrna and have been to Tune.  Both are good airports with expensive gas

Also, in Smyrna Hollingshead has Avis on site and Enterprise will come pick you up.

Flew in for an overnight. Currently sitting at Saint Añejo and would recommend. Appreciate the tip.

Will be getting 10gal at Countour to waive the ramp fee, but I really enjoyed the cheap fuel stop at Cynthiana, KY (0I8) and would recommend that as well. Met some nice folks and the self serve was well priced and easily accessible. Well appointed FBO. They made a point to mention that the door is always unlocked if you need to crash on the couch, and the crew car is fueled up. Not sure what more you can ask from a rural FBO.

I see that philosophy but in the state of Texas with the fuel prices being vastly different for example I can get gas at $4.35 a gallon but if I go to Stinson airport it’s $6.10 a gallon. They require 10 gallons to waive the ramp fee which is $10 a night, if I just pay the $10 ramp fee I can still get 10 gallons at 4:35 and still be $7.50 ahead by not purchasing gas. It’s hey stay in business getting $10 for doing nothing but offer ramp space to park and I’m saving $7.50. If the price difference wasn’t almost 50% higher i would just get the gas. Maybe as they get a new shipment in their prices will come down too.
