This thing goes on the wingtip inside the clear plastic lens (see pictures) and is called a Retainer. Was purchased for a 1982 M20J and not needed. 

Retail price is over $200 plus shipping. For sale for $150.00 with free shipping. If you haven't looked at your retainers in a while, yours have probably suffer the effects of aging.
