Ibra Posted January 3, 2023 Report Posted January 3, 2023 Has anyone replaced their vacuum KI256 with GI275(AI)? The idea is to have GI275(AI) drive attitude for KAP150 while I have 2*G5 in panel: first G5, as standby AI and second G5 as HSI that drive steering for KAP150 via GPSS interface I gather it’s ok to have that GI275 + 2*G5 installation that is compatible with KAP150 for ATT+GPSS? has anyone tried it? I am not yet into biting the bullet to get GFC500, if it’s not broken don’t fix it: for now KI256 is getting tired and KAP150 works beautifully also, I am not after safety backups or redundancies: I have panel vacuum TC, portable pocket Dynon AHRS and iPad Synthetic-Vision, I can keep wing levels in clouds with these then hand fly an ILS or hook KAP150 to LPV Quote

But if you were going just for cost savings overhauling the ki-256 would be the cheapest and you are not out installation labor of installing new equipment. Quote
Ibra Posted January 3, 2023 Author Report Posted January 3, 2023 (edited) The current pannel has 2*G5 + (dead) KI256 + G430W + KAP150 when we bought the aircraft... The plan is to get: 1) GI275 to replace KI256 2) GTN to replace GNS (if it's no longer supported) 3) GFC to replace KAP (when it's dead) Of course, we could just fix KI256 and skip 1) to go straight to 3) Edited January 3, 2023 by Ibra Quote
flyboy0681 Posted January 3, 2023 Report Posted January 3, 2023 We have a GI 275 ADI installed and wired into the KAP 150. They both play nice with each other and there haven't been any issues in the two years that it was installed. 1 Quote
Ibra Posted January 3, 2023 Author Report Posted January 3, 2023 (edited) Looks neat, I am inclined for similar setup to drive the show: GI275 + GTN + KAP150 while 2×G5 are left as backup (or when GFC comes) Does KAP150 fly GPSS turns from GTN? did you get that via GDC31? The GPSS is supplied from the GTN through the ICARUS unit, which is no longer manufactured. Shame too because it can be programmed to announce about a half dozen different events such as a GUMPS check at 1,100 feet above the airport in addition to DA and Altitude alert, which the -275 has, but the ICARUS is easier to program. 1 Quote
Stan Posted January 4, 2023 Report Posted January 4, 2023 I got 2 GI275's with a KAP150. Flys GPSS from the 530. Sorry for the dark picture. 1 Quote
Ibra Posted January 6, 2023 Author Report Posted January 6, 2023 (edited) I checked with an avionics shop, they mentioned that GI275 (AI) + G5 (AI) are independent backups without TC/VAC systems GI275(AI) and back up G5(HSI) are not compatible (this was my initial understanding) I can have GI275 + 2×G5 while removing whole vacuum system and get GI275 to drive KAP (and maybe in future switch to 2×G5 to drive GFC), they also suggested to keep it cheap and just overhaul KI256, carry as before with vacuum system untill KAP dies... 2×GI275+KAP+2×G5+GFC would be an overkill Edited January 6, 2023 by Ibra Quote

As two gi275’s are designed to work together and the HSI version if setup properly will function as a vackup to the primary ADI if that gi275 fails. 1 Quote
McMooney Posted January 6, 2023 Report Posted January 6, 2023 sell the G5's to pay for a GI-275 and go with 2x gi-275 1 Quote
Ibra Posted January 6, 2023 Author Report Posted January 6, 2023 (edited) I gather 2×GI275 flies nicely with GTN+GFC? Edited January 6, 2023 by Ibra 1 Quote

Really the way to go if you still want to keep the kfc until it dies and then go gfc-500 and it will work with that as well. Just make damn sure to pull the gi275 adi circuit breaker and verify the gi275 hsi reverts to an adi before leaving the avionics shop as there was already one incident where the gi275 hsi was not setup properly and when the adi went into align mode the pilot had no adi to fly off of and did some involuntarily acrobatics in IMC before popping out and luckily did not hit the mountains around him before he got out of IMC. 1 1 Quote
