kaba Posted February 15, 2022 Report Posted February 15, 2022 New top prop install on Lyncoming IO-360 A3B6Need new or change to governor orJust change original prop. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
EricJ Posted February 15, 2022 Report Posted February 15, 2022 My IO-360-A3B6D has a top prop and the normal governor. I changed governor a while back due to a failure and we were only looking in the TCDS to verify things. I don't recall that the propeller STC mentions the governor, but that could be double checked pretty easily. Quote
carusoam Posted February 16, 2022 Report Posted February 16, 2022 Are we on a CB budget for gov portion of the project? What gov do you have? How many years/hours on it? Many have bought a recently designed governor…. PCU5000 A simple search should find the name… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a- Quote

jetdriven Posted February 16, 2022 Report Posted February 16, 2022 Check if the PCU5000 is approved for the J model. Not sure it is. 1 Quote

philiplane Posted February 19, 2022 Report Posted February 19, 2022 The scimitar props are a bit quieter, and smoother, than the standard prop. There really is no performance change on engines of less than 250 HP though. Sticking with the two blade was a good idea. Three blades slow down the J. Have the dynamic balance done too. I check my prop balance annually, although I own a balancer. Every 300-500 hours is a good idea no matter what. Quote
Eight8Victor Posted February 20, 2022 Report Posted February 20, 2022 Nice-looking MSE. I have the top prop on my A1A and am pleased. I see 4JJ was formerly owned by the PBC sheriffs office. I wonder in what capacity did they use a Mooney? Quote
bmcconnaha Posted February 20, 2022 Report Posted February 20, 2022 I have it on my J. It was one of two props approved for the the 390. Mine did require a governor change, but I didn’t have the a3b6. I had the a3b6d. I like the prop so far, but I wish the MT was approved. I do like the fact there is no RPM restriction anymore, but I find it’s smoothest at 2500-2600rpm. It’s dynamic balanced there. 2 Quote
jaylw314 Posted February 20, 2022 Report Posted February 20, 2022 I have to admit, going from the Macauley to the Hartzell Top Prop on my J, it seemed like vibrations were if anything a little more noticeable. Not horribly so, but not necessarily better. Granted, I had the Macauley dynamically balanced beforehand. When I got the Hartzell dynamically balanced they said it was already near perfect and only required the smallest weight they could find, yet it still felt a little worse. Quote
amillet Posted February 20, 2022 Report Posted February 20, 2022 I experienced the same as @bmcconnaha and @jaylw314. Top prop is smoother at 2600 than 2500 where I always ran the McCauley. 1 Quote
A64Pilot Posted February 21, 2022 Report Posted February 21, 2022 (edited) Be careful to not over grease the Hartzell, the bigger props you take out the opposite grease zirc and pump until clem grease comes out, do NOT do this with the smaller props. I assume this prop is greased. my three blade Scimitar was. Edited February 21, 2022 by A64Pilot Quote
kaba Posted February 21, 2022 Author Report Posted February 21, 2022 Correct.prop came greased. How do you know how to add annually?Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote

0TreeLemur Posted November 11, 2023 Report Posted November 11, 2023 We bought a new Top Prop for our C in 2020 after a shop condemned the blades on our original prop. It looked great new but the paint would not stay on the primer at the leading edge near the tips. I paid twice to have the prop removed, taken to the shop that sold it to us and repainted. I called Hartzell and they did not care. I've seen other Top Props with the same issue. All I'm saying is that Hartzell has had QA/QC issues with paint not sticking well to primer in the past and if it happens, you are on your own. I will not buy anything from Hartzell in the future. The Top Prop was a perhaps little bit quieter but a Mooney C is a noisy airplane no matter which prop is installed. Performance wise there was no difference that I could discern. 1 Quote

Ragsf15e Posted November 11, 2023 Report Posted November 11, 2023 I used their online quote request last year and got a quick email from an actual person. 2 blade was around $12k. Year and half ago. 1 Quote
