You mean like this?  This is what the inside of the carb intake boot looked like when I installed a Challenger air filter last week.  It's a brand new boot, installed about 13 months ago.  I thought it had little lichens growing on it, but whatever it is it is very attached to the boot.

Yes, when it was apart for an overhaul.
Remember some air filters are soaked in oil, so excess oil ends up coating the air box.

Yes, oily filters can make some crappy stuff downstream.   A few backfire events can ick stuff up, too.

The old Brackett filter instructions used to say to squeeze out the excess oil by placing the filter between a clean shop towel.

They still do. Regardless what I do, there's still some oily mess in the airbox from the filter. I have M20F and it seems there's no other option available except Brackett.

Except maybe K&N but I have no experience with that one.

Did the K&N and removed it. it lost all its "fuzz" on the wire screen and you could see right through it

Went back to Bracket   There is a full paper filter available (Donaldson I think) that I may go to as out here in the wild west we have lots of blowing dust that kills the oily Bracket filter

Anyone ever clean out the inside of their air box? I opened the ram air door to look at the seal

and it looks kind of grungy inside.

Easy way is. When you clean your K&N, grab some shop towels spray with ur choice, and clean as far as you can jam your arm in with air filter removed. Then get someone with skinnier arms to do the same.
