scottfromiowa Posted January 6, 2012 Author Report Posted January 6, 2012 OOPS! Ross had sent me a nice PM (earlier in the project) about how to mix the sealant. I just plain forgot it was there. Just be VERY careful NOT to turn the sealant tube plunger/mixer the wrong way (counter clockwise) BEFORE you have it mixed and want to remove or you can NOT put it back in. Mike warned me of this. Turn clockwise as you mix...or use a drill to eliminate manual work. Quote
scottfromiowa Posted January 6, 2012 Author Report Posted January 6, 2012 Partner and I spent five hours today and made a lot of progress on the interior. All insulation is installed and taped. The interior overhead vents are painted as are the center (between seats) plastic on the floor and the nose gear shroud. We trimmed and installed new carpet in baggage area and installed first piece of re-cloth covered (Airtex cloth) ceiling piece in baggage area. Lynn at Singer Hill Upholstery in C.R. did a magnificient job on re-do of the cloth headliner. I took the door plastic to him with fabric accent on top removed and he cut it and replaced on the door. He also re-covered the door pull (vinyl) and exit strap (by sunvisor) with stitching. The vinyl (looks like leather) is a near perfect match to the fabric and paint! All his work was VERY REASONABLY priced as I brought patterns (removed headliner) to him. He replaced backing and even did baggage door windlace...LOOKS IDENTICAL to original BUT NOT 45 YEARS OLD!!! We have probably 5-6 more hours of work re-installing interior and re-connecting all the rheostat lights, rear passenger headset jacks, carpet runners for pilot-co-pilot etc...Home stretch. I forgot camera, but will get photos of the insulation and carpet/baggage area ASAP. In addition to powder-coating the inside door handle (black) I am having the baggage door handle and exterior entry door handle powder coated in antique silver. This is necessary as the baggage door has some significant wear (pits) that the antique (crackled type finish) will eliminate. Should dress up the handles nicely from the current condition (see photos of handle in my gallery). All for now... Quote
jetdriven Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 Scott, there is another thread here that shows that baggage door handle is an Amerock brand and its a standard cabinet latch that costs 12$ to replace. T-459 is the P/N. http://www.mooneyspace.com/index.cfm?mainaction=posts&forumid=2&threadid=3325 X-ray sure looks good in that green with those new windows, and the 201 windshield. Quote

JaredDavis Posted January 7, 2012 Report Posted January 7, 2012 I think the '66 models have a different pull shape. Quote

scottfromiowa Posted January 7, 2012 Author Report Posted January 7, 2012 I have always thought that the baggage door handle didn't quite look right. Very cabinet drawer looking...Especially in comparison to the round simple door exterior entry pull handle. I bought this. Brass for $2.00 at Menards. Simply Elegant, Modern, Chrome, Functional. jetdriven Posted January 7, 2012 Report Posted January 7, 2012 I like the look of that one bettr, Scott. And a calculated drag reduction of .0012 knots! Quote

scottfromiowa Posted January 7, 2012 Author Report Posted January 7, 2012 I hear you Dave. My motivation to paint...Following tank(s) re-seal for 2012. Quote
scottfromiowa Posted January 7, 2012 Author Report Posted January 7, 2012 I just bought one of those too (Black Base on Ebay). That is a "dead-ringer" for the OEM. I was going to pay $30.00 to powder coat so this is a great deal on a new-old stock item. Thanks again Byron. You have been helping me spend some money :<) Search under Amerock 3.5 inch. Quote
scottfromiowa Posted January 21, 2012 Author Report Posted January 21, 2012 Home stretch for interior. We have all interior plastic reinstalled except the pilot door. We are waiting on mechanic to re-pin the exterior door handle (now back from powder-coat). I replaced the door and entry/egress pull mounting screw with stainless and went a little shorter...wrong. Bought replacements a little longer as well as stainless screws for courtesy light that were a little too small. Those as well as carpet to be installed at next visit when plane will be ready also from having the G3 probes all installed. This has been a lot of work in combination with the window and insulation replacement, but the plane should REALLY be nice to fly cosmetically as well as mechanically now. Looking forward to enjoying it for years to come. Final photos will follow when completed. We couldn't re-install the cover (nose gear well) we removed and painted because it was removed with the plane on jacks...When gear is down and locked we can't get it on...good reason to fly :<) Quote
Shadrach Posted January 22, 2012 Report Posted January 22, 2012 Geat work Scott, I cant wait to see pictures! It appears as though you refinished or replaced all cosmetic wear items. I truly enjoy watching the transition from old and tattered to better than new. I'm not sure re-installation of gear-well cover in flight is the best idea. The cover itself is no problem, but the trim and flap indicators were a bitch in my plane. In my airplane they did not have captured nut plates, so it took a fare amount of fettling to get them both lined up installed and accurate. Your bird might be a bit different. Good luck! Quote

JaredDavis Posted January 29, 2012 Report Posted January 29, 2012 Nice pilot side panel. Do you know who supplied the new panel? LASAR? Quote
scottfromiowa Posted January 29, 2012 Author Report Posted January 29, 2012 Thanks! No. Hendricks MFG. There is a huge post in the archive on this. Google them. Owner/contact is a M20E owner himself. Scott Quote
