Cris Posted November 3, 2011 Report Posted November 3, 2011 Yesterday I flew from Atlantic City to Burlington Vt. R/T My Ipad 2 with Ios 5 was fully charged so I was expecting I'd have plenty of battery pwr for a 4 hour round trip flight. Nada. I had 5 % left at the end of the day. I suspect I had a total of 4-5 hours of actual use. Apple is now admitting to a bug in the IOS 5 operating system which shortens battery life on bothe the Ipad & Iphone. Just be aware that you will not be getting the same battery life as you did with the old IOS 4 operating sustem. There is a fix on the way. Separately I have not flown that route for a number of years. I could not believe the number of full route clearances that I received in both directions. I was doing 175 kts at 7 K LOP with a headwind for two hours & the return was 205 knots at 8 K LOP but a trip by way of Mass & Pa with 14 full route segments changed four times over 2.5 hrs. It was a drop dead georgeous day smooth as silk for my first time passenger so I did have some luck. I'd hate to do that trip in bad weather. I can't imagine the changes I'd get.

N601RX Posted November 3, 2011 Report Posted November 3, 2011 apple anounced there are some battery usage problems with ios 5 they said they will release an update in a couple of weeks that will fix the problem
Cris Posted November 3, 2011 Author Report Posted November 3, 2011 My Icloud backup was off but Apple apparently feels the quick fix is related to a constant "ping" for setting of the time zones. Go to Settings>Location services>Sustem services>Setting Time Zones & turn "off". I'm waiting till after Day Light Savings Time
carusoam Posted November 3, 2011 Report Posted November 3, 2011 Consider turning down the brightness for a bandaid solution.... I use my iPad 1 with ios5 all day for emails and mooneyspace..... Best regards, -a-
jlunseth Posted November 3, 2011 Report Posted November 3, 2011 I haven't noticed a big problem with my iPad 1, but to avoid power loss in the cockpit I just got a cheap 12v cigarette lighter charger and leave it plugged in while in the aircraft. Works fine.
Ncbosshoss Posted November 3, 2011 Report Posted November 3, 2011 Here is a little tip that was shown to me. I can't explain it in technical terms but the iPad keeps apps running in the back ground. If you press the button at the bottom of the screen twice, it will pull up a window and you will be amazed at all the apps running in the background. I was told this can add to battery drain. To get rid of them, hold an icon for a couple of seconds and they will all become active fore deletion. There may be another way to get rid of them or an app killer or something. Again, I have no idea if there is any truth to this or not but they are there. I keep mine deleted ever so often. Chris
Jeff_S Posted November 4, 2011 Report Posted November 4, 2011 I bought the iPhone 4S and upgraded my iPad 1 to iOS 5 on the same day, so they are both running iOS 5. I haven't really noticed a battery problem on the phone, but I have noticed a distinct drop in battery life on the iPad. I am glad to hear that they have a fix in the works as I was concerned. In the meantime, I'll try disabling the iCloud feature because I can't for the life of me figure out why I would want that in the first place.

Cabanaboy Posted November 4, 2011 Report Posted November 4, 2011 I have an IPAD 2. I have not updated to v iOS 5 yet and the battery life is terrible, even if i am not using it. I bought early and it was 1 of the first one out. Last time i will ever buy one first or soon after release, each phone i bought had some type of problem on each 1. I am on a Iphone 4 (antena gate). I am so glad i did not order an iphone 4s so quick this time. I heard the problem about battery on iphone 4s, but did not know it was also linked to ipad2. I hope they can fix both.....
Ron McBride Posted November 4, 2011 Report Posted November 4, 2011 I have an IPad 2. I found that if I close the cover, the programs keep running and shorten the battery life. I now close the program and then the cover, battery life is much greater. I have a charger in the plane to keep mine fully charged on the longer flights. I flew last month on 2 days over 9 hours each day, plus fuel stops and had a fully charged IPad at the end of each day. Ron
Cris Posted November 4, 2011 Author Report Posted November 4, 2011 Yes the cover bug is another known issue as in IOS4 the smart cover shut down the apps but in 5 the apps stay open draining the batt.
