At those speeds, the power requirement is almost entirely from parasite drag.  It's already clear that piston-prop aircraft motors are already some of the most efficient heat motors in common use (and near the practical thermodynamic maximum), so it's hard to imagine any other motor/propulsion system will do better than a Rocket (or @Yooper Rocketman's slippery Lancair, for that matter) at those speeds.

Yes!

It seems like everybody thinks our engines are old inefficient dinosaurs, when in fact they are some of the most efficient engines ever made.

I remember my ex-wife's brother had an off shore race boat. he said his engine made 500 HP. I asked how much fuel it used, He said about 80 GPH. lets see, my IO-360 uses 18 GPH making 200 HP, so that would be 45 GPH at 500 HP. These modern high performance engines don't look so good!

You can buy a jet warbird for an amazingly cheap price if you shop around. You can buy an old bizjet for an amazingly cheap price.

But then you have to operate the things! Jets are crazy expensive to operate!

They look great parked on the ramp outside of your hangar.

This is what I say about horses. Man they look good, from afar.

If you buy, then buy two (talking vintage jets or birds not horses)

If this ever came about I might be one of the first in line to buy one. Especially if its pressurized. About the only thing I dont like about my mooney ( or any other piston) is the noise.

KH,

You should hear Erik’s MT on his Rocket...

The composite prop has a much different sound profile... much lower than the typical Mooney props...

Not sure how you could try one on for size for your plane...

Best regards,

Yes the softest sounds I had were composite propellers & engines with gear-box, after that 6 cylinders with 2 blades, worst were 4 cylinders with 3 blades prop which is what I am flying: I am a noise happy person but for passengers are well served get them 4 good ANR headsets, for RT comfort: good audio pannel & setup of radio & intercom is a must

Some fly jets, motorcycles and open cockpits as some braincells get activated by specific frequencies & amplitudes :D

I've thought about that. I have a student with a 182 and a 3 blade MT composite. It's really quiet. After the 160k I just spent on avionics I dont have much left. I wanted a paint job too but couldnt justify it...

Maybe in 800 hours at TBO (if it lasts that long) I will get a new prop. At that point I'm hoping for a different engine option than a rebuilt LB.
