Help!!,  Trying to find mooney that has been converted from O360  to IO 360 with 201 cowling and prop. Any help appreciated.

Welcome aboard rdn...

What specifically are you looking for? Just the STCs?

docs, pics, a plane to buy?

Something we can help you with I’m sure...

Some STCs for those may be in the hands of their creator... The STC creator... who may have gone to see the big guy...

Others may still be available from Lasar...

Cost wise... turning a C into an E is a tough financial pill to swallow... making it a modern E is even more expensive...

Have no fear... Forever planes are worth the investment...

Best regards,

In order to take a C to an E your going to need to do the following.

Find a IO-360, preferably a IO-360A1B6 (or have your O rebuilt by penyan) and get the lasar 200 HP Conversion STC

Find a M20J 201 top and bottom cowl, left and right cowl flaps, engine baffling and duz cowl firewall mount support.

Locate a Hartzell Top Prop kit for a M20J or contact hartzell and explain your ordering for a M20C with a M20J firewall forward.

This will require at least 1 STC and 2 337s, I think I have access to the data for the cowl and top prop for an E but only for a -A1A which means it has the "No cont. ops. above 24″ btwn. 2350 and 2550 rpm" limitation.

This also will require completely splitting the skins from the firewall so that you can replace the cowl attach points, I recommend also doing a J sloped windscreen. It goes without saying unless you are of the type to get your hands dirty and can locate a friendly A&P this is not a project for the faint of heart. It is also worth keeping in mind, this will not increase the gross weight limit of your C.

If any of you have pictures of how the airframe needs to be modified I would like to see them.  I would like to upgrade my cowl someday.

Unless you're totally set on a 201 cowl, @Sabremech is working on a much improved version for the vintage models that would probably be much simpler to pursue.

I know it’s been quite a while “in the works” stage, but I’m making progress. The first lower cowling stuck in the mold last week, so looking to next week for the first lower cowling to be finished. All the other molds are made and ready to produce parts.

@201wantabe wow! Where did all that deep detail come from? :)

Sounds like you may be really/extra familiar...

My M20E was bought mid conversion using a top prop and factory M20J parts. The prop has been changed with the spinner that works with the M20J cowl and my cowl I have been fixing as it was part of a gear up. I met with the ATL FSDO and talked the plan over with them and they are fully onboard.

Its a lot, if someone offered a kit that used the factory cowl duz holes rather then requiring them be replaced to mount to a J this would be much easier. The mooney parts manual does not provide a detailed drawing of the firewall and cowl supports on the firewall but the highlighted areas are what will need to be drilled out and split to replace the supports. That is why I claim if your going to go this far you should do the 201 windscreen as well.

OP Joined, posted, left and never came back. Surprising how often that happens.

It is funny how the OP posted this and their is currently 2 C models that reflect his question for sale right now.

Some questions are just so easy to ask...

MS is the right place to go to find the answer...

Many people have gone through the phase of....   If I start with an affordable C... can I upgrade it step wise.... over time..?

Amazingly, if it is a forever-plane, it can be done... step wise over time...

If not a forever-plane...  get one that already has the mods...  :)

The OP is probably out working the math for the amus and AMUs....

Interest rates are awfully low lately...

Hey... great update, David!  (What are you using for mold release?)

Hi Anthony, I’d have to ask the shop (Knots2U) but they are the experts on cowlings etc. I know they were pretty frustrated that it happened, but we’ll get it figured out. Thanks.

Depending on your process I prefer mold release wax number 8 with pva sprayed in to the mold. However, I am sure this is not their first rodeo.

I have seen similar challenges with boat molds...  kind of similar... fiberglass parts in a mold... part finish is important. Slow molding times (hours/days)

Familiar with plastics molding as well...   not very similar... thermo plastics in a steel mold... fast molding times (seconds)

Plastics 102 kind of stuff...

PP thoughts only, not a molding guru...

Kind of a related topic...  What is the difference in fuel burn between the o-360 and IO-360 for same MAP and RPM?  Say 25-25.
