Joe Larussa Posted December 3, 2019 Report Posted December 3, 2019 Anybody have a hubcap for a main on a 77 M20J ? Mine departed the airplane. Quote
DonMuncy Posted December 3, 2019 Report Posted December 3, 2019 You need to be a little more specific. Several sources for hubcaps. If it is just a flat aluminum plate with three mounting holes, the ones I make would be virtually indistinguishable. Quote
Joe Larussa Posted December 3, 2019 Author Report Posted December 3, 2019 Pretty much flat I guess. Made of some kind of polished metal with three holes. Quote
Joe Larussa Posted December 3, 2019 Author Report Posted December 3, 2019 Here’s a pic. I guess it’s a little cupped. Quote
carusoam Posted December 3, 2019 Report Posted December 3, 2019 1) Call the local MSC....they then call the Mooney factory... 2) Call the organization of allied hangar fairies.... OOAHF. 3) Contact Don I’m a big fan of supporting your favorite airplane factory... But #3 above may be a bit more simple... The M20R has just a round disc with three holes in it... probably a part from Parker(?) the wheel maker... Best regards, -a- Quote
DonMuncy Posted December 3, 2019 Report Posted December 3, 2019 The "little bit cupped" is beyond my capabilities. I made one for a friend that was polished (but flat). It took about an hour to make the hubcap, and about 3 hours to polish it. That is why mine are painted. But mine have the advantage of having a small hole with a cover, so you can check and add air without having to completely removing the hubcap. 1 Quote

I wonder if they'd clear the shrader valve. -Robert Quote
jrwilson Posted December 3, 2019 Report Posted December 3, 2019 Lasar has stainless steel ones...$55 for a pair for the main gear, $45 for the nose. 1 Quote
Guest Posted December 3, 2019 Report Posted December 3, 2019 If it left the wheel, you should check the screw holes, they do wear out over time. With some care you can install a 8-32 Helicoil to restore the hole. Clarence Quote
larrynimmo Posted December 3, 2019 Report Posted December 3, 2019 I too have hub caps on my wheels, but honestly I don't see where they do much good. Being mindful that if they sit in hanger (99% of the hours) they are not exposed to anything. During the 1%, actual flight time, they are 90% of that time tucked up inside the wing. Quote
DonMuncy Posted December 3, 2019 Report Posted December 3, 2019 I admit that hubcaps don't really do anything. To me my plane just doesn't look fully dressed without them. 1 1 Quote

Not sure where they ended up but didn’t do any damage when they came off. Quote
Davidv Posted December 4, 2019 Report Posted December 4, 2019 I went through this a few months back, surprising how tough to get such a simple part. I called Don Maxwell but they never got back to me (after a few inquiries). I finally contacted my mechanic Phil J. here in Florida and he was nice enough to give me a pair for free. 1 Quote
PT20J Posted December 6, 2019 Report Posted December 6, 2019 I can’t understand why anyone would want something that you have to remove to check/replenish the air in the tires. The airplane sits so low to the ground that you can hardly see the wheels anyway. But if you must - LASAR sells stainless steel main gear hubcaps for the CB-pleasing price of $55/pair and nose wheel covers for $45. So for $100 you can have shiny hubcaps. You can paint them if you must. EOT Quote
