kevinw
I came across this on the Mooney Pilots Facebook page yesterday. Check out this flight from Kona to Oakland. Is this by chance a Mooneyspacer? http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N916BL

SantosDumont
How many gallons can his tanks hold?!
gsxrpilot
He has the extended Monroy tank which is 106 gal I believe. He also has a 100 gal ferry tank in place of the back seat. Hawaii to California wasn't even his longest over water leg.
SantosDumont
I was gonna say, I have the 100 Gal long range tanks on my F and it wouldn't be enough... but with an extra 100Gal... although you could only fill it up about halfway to be within W&B. Bob_Belville
W&B? Don't be silly.
gsxrpilot
With a ferry permit, W&B is completely different. He's able to fly with all 206 gal on board.
thinwing
I wonder how his takeoffs went with 1200 lbs of fuel?

ArtVandelay
I wonder what his oil consumption is? I saw a show where they were doing a ferry flight and they rigged up a oil filler line as well.

At the Santa Maria MAPA proficiency class, we had a guest speaker who had bought his Mooney in the USA and ferried it to home in Australia, first stop Hawaii. Coincidentally, the ferry tank install and the launching point was Santa Maria. It was ideally suited as a very long runway and unimpeded access to the Pacific ocean with no airspace or obstacles to navigate around with all that extra weight, because it did not climb for s**t. I think he said it was several hours over the Pacific before he could get over 6000'. Difficult to imagine.
wishboneash
This one was tragic http://www.pprune.org/pacific-general-aviation-questions/483560-vh-ppa-mooney-m20r-fatal-crash-ferry-flight.html
gsxrpilot
For Brian, taking off from Kona, it took about 45 minutes to get to his cruising altitude of 21,000 ft. Of course he's flying an M20K 231.
Danb
I calculated a few legs it appeared he climbed to 21000 at 375 FPM, Not bad.
