kmyfm20s Posted August 28, 2016 Report Posted August 28, 2016 I would love to go but I could only get ahold of 1 ticket. I'm sure it's fun by yourself but for the first time I wanted to have a partner in crime. Give us a pirep when you get back. Incidentally I will be flying directly over it on way to Oregon to go pheasant hunting. I want to do a low pass but a little worried of drone activity. Quote
mooneygirl Posted August 28, 2016 Report Posted August 28, 2016 I would love to go, but wouldn't take my plane in there. I love my paint job too much. Here is what flight aware says: http://flightaware.com/live/airport/88NV 1 Quote
kortopates Posted August 28, 2016 Report Posted August 28, 2016 I have the same issue. Although it's not so much the paint but the amount of cleaning it is likely to need after; especially into places that I can't easily clean. I have seen too many birds come out of there after being parked over a windy day and the grime goes everywhere! There are of course lucky ones that don't stay long and get out without the grime. But I would love a ride in some day though in someone else's bird! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1 Quote
DaV8or Posted August 28, 2016 Report Posted August 28, 2016 I used to rent portable generators and other equipment that went to Burning Man. I quit and refused to rent for that event very quickly. The environment is very hard on equipment and people. There is reason nobody lives there! That fine dust is corrosive and abrasive. It gets into everything, everywhere. Do not try to hose it off!! Water turns it to cement. Wipe, blow and vacuum it off. Those planes parked there will be carrying that dust forever no mater how hard their owners try to clean it all off. I have heard that some plane owners that do park there thoroughly tape off all openings and gaps with blue painter's tape and plastic sheeting. Maybe you could use that stretch wrap they use on pallets too. However think about trying to plug every hole and way into a Mooney. That's a lot of plugging!! I have thought about going out there just to fly over and have a look, but no way I'm landing and staying. Not in my plane anyhow. 1 Quote
Bennett Posted August 28, 2016 Report Posted August 28, 2016 When I flew to Burning Man (Piper Dakota), I taped every opening, door and cowl seams, and nose bowl areas (plastic sheeting), and still had dust and dirt inside the airplane. Man, the wind blows hard there - especially in the middle of the night - blew down my alpine tent, with me in it, and knocked down more conventional stand up tents all around me - camping near the airplanes. Tough to set tie down spikes. Rebar works fine if you can drive it into the ground. A sledge hammer is helpful. Bring bicycles - plain old cheap 3 speeds are fine. Give rides-make new friends for aviation. p> 1 Quote
FloridaMan Posted August 28, 2016 Author Report Posted August 28, 2016 I'm not there; I just saw that Mooney in a picture in an article about the airport at burning man. It, of course, was filled with comments hating "the rich" and how they wish they'd see some of these rich people "who don't belong" crash and burn. Funny how hypocritical this whole "love and acceptance" thing can be. 5 Quote

I think back in the early days burning man was more pure and now it's turned into a big "happening" no desire to ever go and even less to expose my Mooney to such an inhospitable location and judgmental crowd Quote

In all fairness we don't know if any of those comments come from anyone at the event much less a majority even if they did. Quote
carusoam Posted August 29, 2016 Report Posted August 29, 2016 The article is posted here.... Yesterday's news with the same picture at least... http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2016/08/26/burning-mans-pop-airport-rises-nevada-desert/89441496/ They are as accurate with their stories as they are with plane crashes.... gsxrpilot Posted August 29, 2016 Report Posted August 29, 2016 That's not my Mooney in the picture, but mine is parked a few spots down the row from that one. I've got it taped and wrapped as much as possible. We'll see how it goes, but certainly a bucket list item to fly in to 88NV. Quote
FBCK Posted August 30, 2016 Report Posted August 30, 2016 I know a gent who took his 2004 182 down a few years back. Everything was fine but soon after his brakes were destroyed, set him back 2 k or so. He thought it was the dust, took him awhile to clean the plane up. Quote

There is a specific pattern that aircraft fly around the playa and the "city". You could probably find the diagrams on the web. There are often quite a few aircraft landing and leaving the airstrip, along with more than a few pilots giving rides and sightseeing themselves. Quote

Exactly! I wouldn't want to be the burning man at "Burning Man" Quote

thinwing Posted September 1, 2016 Report Posted September 1, 2016 I've got an airport friend that goes every year...he uses a special van,pop up,and old cheap mountain bikes....every piece of metal on all vehicles shows signs of rust, corrosion etc...that playa dust is leftover runoff going back 20000 years...remember 20 mule team borax... gsxrpilot Posted September 2, 2016 Report Posted September 2, 2016 I'm having fun out here at the Burn this week. There are three Mooney's here and one of them is a regular. I talked to several other pilots who have been here every year for over 15 years and their planes are in great condition. There will be some work involved in cleaning the plane when I get back home, but I believe it's well worth the effort. This is an amazing event. Quote
carusoam Posted September 2, 2016 Report Posted September 2, 2016 Gonna need some photos Paul. Your the best! Best regards, -a- Quote
