Learning something new

I try to learn something new on every flight I make. Sometimes it is refining my technique, sometimes it is from listening to the airliners talk to ATC, sometimes it is just something new (to me) .

On my last IFR flight while being vectored for the approach, ATC gave me this instruction: "report heading 125.25"

what would you do?

Was 125.25 the tower or Approach frequency?

Means to check-in with your heading (and altitude) on 125.25....  That's what I would have done.

you only get to talk to the tower after you are cleared for the approach.

Correct!

but I have never heard it said that way before.
