TWinter Posted July 15, 2016 Report Posted July 15, 2016 Question for the experts on yoke swaps... We (my shop AP and my checkbook) are swapping yokes from the originals (1974-skinny) to the thicker 201 style. I purchased the Yokes, new shaft for J yokes and bushings from EBay vendor I've purchased from in the past. On the original shafts there is a rectangular mounting block/guide. Do the blocks need to be transferred to the new shafts, or do the new guides like in the bottom picture used in place of the original rectangular block guides. The question to the experts or those who have done the swap. Do these blocks stay on the OEM shafts or need to be transferred over to the new shaft, if so is there any special technique? I've contacted a few folks and I'm getting conflicting replies. Some say the blocks transfer to be used on the new shaft, other say the shaft secures using the new bushing/bearing mounted on the panel as pictured in the last picture? The last shaft picture is what I think it should look like and not use the blocks? Since I'm not at the shop I pulled the last picture off EBay showing a bearing/guide similar to what came with the new shafts. Blocks stay or go? anybody? The email I got from the guy I bought them from: The IPC for J Models shows the that you use either the control tube Guide Block for a certain range 24-0001 thru 24-0900 of serial numbers or the bearing guide assy like I sent for anything newer. Thoughts? I have a 73/74 E... I do have a AP doing all this..He was just trying to get them pulled out late today so I could get them sent to the buyer...He really has not had time to look over all the parts for the swap and we did not want to send out something we might need later on the new install. He thought I might check with the guy I bought them from regarding the blocks...I checked with him and I thought I would ask the real experts..MooneySpace Thanks in advance, -Tom Quote
Marauder Posted July 15, 2016 Report Posted July 15, 2016 Dang Tom. I was just at the airport and could have easily taken pictures under my yokes. If it can wait till morning, I can take them then. Do you have the paperwork for the swap? Quote
TWinter Posted July 15, 2016 Author Report Posted July 15, 2016 Everything is at the shop.I only opened the box to look at the yokes when they came in..Been in the closet waiting for the avionics work..My mechanic just opened it up this afternoon before heading home to take a look.. He was trying to get the old ones pulled out so I could ship them. I'm not sure what all was in the shipping box. I'm sure everything was there..He just called asking about the blocks. The yokes came off EBay, same guy EBay (Hugito1) Hugo, I think he is in the San Antonio area, I bought my seats from a few years back. I think a lot of his items come from Aero Comfort. I needed material for a headrest one time and Hector said he remembered doing my seats prior to me buying them from the EBay guy. My AP won't be back on it until Monday. If you get a chance take a pic or maybe somebody that has done the swap will chime in. Thanks, Quote
N601RX Posted July 15, 2016 Report Posted July 15, 2016 I have the factory drawings for doing the conversion. They are large scale, but I can make a picture when I get home or scan them at work next week. 1 Quote

TWinter Posted July 16, 2016 Author Report Posted July 16, 2016 Wow..Good stuff. I'll look through all of it and pass it on to him. Since we will not have PC some will not apply. I'll let him decipher what he needs. Chris, if you could still snap a picture of the mount area where it attaches to the bottom of the dash that would help a lot..I'll look back over all of this carefully and see if I can see any additional details. Thanks, -Tom Quote
N601RX Posted July 16, 2016 Report Posted July 16, 2016 Mine uses the round mount that is shown in your bottom picture above. The square mount is for newer modes that have a welded tab on the crossbar. Quote

So it's either or..not both. Quote
N601RX Posted July 16, 2016 Report Posted July 16, 2016 Yes only use one. the round one doesn't have the welded tab to put the bolt through and Is just mounted to the panel with 3 screws and nuts Quote

M20F-1968 Posted July 20, 2016 Report Posted July 20, 2016 You will want to use the bearing assembly that is in the last picture. That is current production. To do it right, you might want to TIG weld a steel plate onto you structural cage (horizontal bar) if you do not have something solid to attach the frames to. When I did mine, I had the plane apart. I do not know what degree of disassembly your plane is in. John Breda Quote
