par Posted May 1, 2016 Report Posted May 1, 2016 Is it possible to use an HSI out of a k with a 28v system in my 12v C? If so, what additional parts would I need to buy to make this happen?
Jerry 5TJ Posted May 1, 2016 Report Posted May 1, 2016 You need a "boost converter." Here is one example.
ArtVandelay Posted May 1, 2016 Report Posted May 1, 2016 Depends on the HSI, if modern then it might be dual voltage, did you check model specifications?
par Posted May 1, 2016 Author Report Posted May 1, 2016 The HSI in question is a KCS55A with a remote gyro. I'm not too sure if it's dual voltage. I'll have to do some more research.
ArtVandelay Posted May 1, 2016 Report Posted May 1, 2016 The HSI in question is a KCS55A with a remote gyro. I'm not too sure if it's dual voltage. I'll have to do some more research. There is 2 ways the older avionics handled dual voltages: A switch (sometimes a dip switch inside) or the wiring has 2 inputs, which wire you hook up depends on which voltage, you'll need to check the gyro as well. And it may depend on the serial number
Jerry 5TJ Posted May 1, 2016 Report Posted May 1, 2016 The KCS-55 system is mostly dual-voltage capable. However... The KG-102/102A contains a power supply that can be switched from 14 to 28V input. If it is set to 14 volts you must not connect it to 28 V, warns the manual. That power supply provides various voltages to run the KI525, KMT112 and KA51 units. However, the panel mounted units also connect to lighting dimmer circuits, and there are two bulb versions for some of the boxes. For instance, the KA51A is available in 14 or 28 volt bulb version (071-1053-03 for 14V, 071-1053-04 for 28V). If you do buy the system try to get the entire harness uncut. If possible where the harness must be cut mark each wire so you can splice or replace them. If you are ONLY buying the KI-525 HSI you also need a KG-102, KMT112 and KA51 to make it work. If you wish to couple it to an autopilot, you may need to add the KA52 or KA 57 autopilot adapter to this collection. A copy of the Install manual is available at KCS-55 Install Better yet, buy an Aspen 1000. 1
par Posted May 1, 2016 Author Report Posted May 1, 2016 The system is being sold with all its components but I will need to double check about the harness. Can anyone venture a guess as to what it would cost to install all the components? I wish I could afford an aspen 1000 but I simply can't. The cost difference between the aspen and this is massive.
