Does anyone have experience (yet) with the KI 300, as a replacement for the KI 256 on older Mooney's? Can I use it to make myself entirely electric (2000 M20R; the KI 256 is the only thing requiring a vacuum pump). It seems like a reasonable path when the KI 256 needs to be overhauled. Any opinions/experiences?

They have pretty pictures of it, and a not-so-unreasonable price attached to it. If I could get rid of my vacuum system I could also get 6lbs or so back of useful load (maybe more).

Anyway, didn't realize that it actually isn't out yet.

Thanks!

I believe there was an announcement that it was delayed to the fourth quarter, supposedly this year. Considering their track record with the KSN 770, who knows when it will be available.

The Bendix/King folks at Sun n Fun said it will be available in September but would not hazard a guess of what year.  Internal battery did not have enough stored energy to pass the required test.

we all have experience with the ki300...its called the kLn 770.

here comes this glimmer of hope, the ki300. it has the blessing of the FAA. slide it in and hook it up...nice. no such luck. I've been around for a while, a king stack was once the gold standard...hell i have king stuff in my mooney, from 1998 and still performing perfectly. i loved king stuff...the rest paled in comparison, but such is life. look at Apple...just as king did...captured the market, got fat dumb and happy and was ripe for the picking. Apple has run out of gas and ideas and will shortly be knocked off its perch like King was. Apple has the fan boys to sustain them for a while...just like King did, I'm one of those King fanboys. Its the normal cycle of business, exceptions are rare.

I think the answer is that you will be able to remove your vacuum system once you install the KI 300...  Even the FAA put out a document (someone knows where it is...I don't have it) where they finally acknowledge that you're better off with an electronic AI over any mechanical/vacuum driven one...or something to that effect.

I wish someone else would come up with one that's a direct replacement and plays nice with the King autopilots...

That's amazing since Apple just had their best quarter ever in their 40 year history

http://9to5mac.com/2016/01/26/apple-earnings-fy16-q1/

It was also the most profitable quarter for any publicly traded company ever.

Comparing Apple to King who can't bring a product to market to save their life is not accurate at all.

Apple has about 6 billion customers.  They are starting to have difficulty finding their next billion.  Their customers like to upgrade phones every two years. They created a product that nobody was going to use, an iPad. Now, Every pilot wants one, many have two...

There are approximately 600,000 private pilots in the US,. (According to apple's Siri)

there are 200,000 ga planes and helicopters.

how many of these pilots are buying new navcoms for those 200,000 planes this year?

we have just defined the difference between mass markets and niche markets...

Some suppliers can bridge this gap.  Garmin has gone from two X-BK guys and turned themselves into a formidable force of GPS for the masses corporation.  Their business model is still old BK in style.  Their cell phones didn't pan out.  One and done...

Narco was a mediocre radio company, their market share got eaten by BK.  BK was old school and their GA business has been eroded by Garmin.  Garmin has been riding the wave of innovation and technology at a pace that BK can't keep up with.  BK has enlisted various competitors to help compete against big G.  (Aspen, PS, trig have been onboard with BK).  BK's parent is an instrument panel builder for more complex jets...

Along comes Avidyne.  high quality product, new technical features, delivering on a schedule, at a price point that is not horrible and installation that uses most of the existing one from previous big G radios...

Garmin has had a couple of black eyes that they have had difficulty dealing with.  Antennae and G1000 systems that had issues.  The antennae issues have been identified and mostly resolved.  The G1000 issue hasn't moved in years.  A solution could be around the corner.

Why the new GTN doesn't fit in the old G430W or G530W with a few new wires added?

probably the same reason Apple went with the new lightning plug on the IPhone5 and ipad4...

It is slightly technically better and the market accepts it...

2016 looks to be a good year.  New planes are being sold, price of fuel has become more affordable, digital devices have blown most of the analog devices off the standards list.  Even some high end chips are analog devices.  Go figure....

Digital devices with HD screens delivering more valuable information than the old mechanical devices ever could, with more reliability and better back-ups than could be imagined with a battery, generator and a vacuum pump... Who's idea was an electric motorized back-up vacuum pump?  Brilliant!

a simple $100 iPad delivering WAAS approach information from a battery powered handheld device, displaying graphical weather and traffic and delivers Aerosmith tunes through a wifi connection.  Love my halos....

I'm glad to have the representatives for G and Avi here.  They have their work cut out for them...

I wanted to stay all BK with my panel.  The KSN770 hasn't delivered on expectations. Still waiting...

Who is our BK guy?

I'm interested in a newer better HSI/AI, but I'm not fixing what isn't broken...

Any Mooneys with a KSN in them?

Best regards,
