ChristianGodin Posted April 6, 2016 Report Posted April 6, 2016 There is a 1992 M20J for sale with a turbo kit install at 2000 hours, now 2500. What do you think of this Mooney. Any comments would be very appreciated Thank You http://www.airplanemart.com/aircraft-for-sale/Single-Engine-Piston/1992-Mooney-M20J/11711/ Quote
BobAustin Posted April 6, 2016 Report Posted April 6, 2016 A nice plane in my opinion. Looks well cared for. Few questions below: When (hours) did the prop replacement/teardown occur ? Turbo normalizer a plus especially out west. In Quebec maybe good to get and stay above clouds/icing. ADF etc just extra weight remove them unless ADF useful in your area.. Useful load pretty low as a result. 1 Quote
chrisk Posted April 6, 2016 Report Posted April 6, 2016 I did not realize there was a turbo normalized STC for a J model. I wonder if it has an intercooler? Quote
KSMooniac Posted April 6, 2016 Report Posted April 6, 2016 Yes, there was an STC available for the M20J (and the E/F) from M20 Turbos, but it is no longer available or supported to my knowledge. It had a fixed wastegate and an intercooler. The ad says it has an IO-360-B1E, which I don't think can be correct unless someone swapped that engine via field approval. I've never noticed an STC to do that, and the M20 Turbos STC is only applicable to the -A3B6(D) and -A1A variants. 1 Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted April 6, 2016 Report Posted April 6, 2016 While the STC is not supported, most of the parts are 231 parts. The parts that are not are fixable by a good welder. The only parts that worry me are the rubber couplings in the intake system. If nobody is making them I will have to do an owner produced part. Quote
Mcstealth Posted April 10, 2016 Report Posted April 10, 2016 Did you notice the UL? It is in the 800's. Is this adequate for your mission? As Turbo just said, this STC is unsupported. The husband passed and the widow and family has nothing to do with aviation. Maxwell installed a couple of these, and if I remember correctly, it was around 40 hours. They could be a source for you. As for the plane itself, what's not to like? It's a Mooney isn't it Quote
