Houman Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 Replacing the seal on the storm window today and noticed the hinges are a bit dirty and rusty, what would you recommand for cleaning them ? I was thinking of using either Brake Cleaner or some other surface rust cleaner... Thanks for suggestions.
Shadrach Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 Brake cleaner will likely destroy the widow. I would first try soaking it in white vinegar for several hours. Then maybe move to more aggressive (scotchbrite) methods. You should be prepared to polish out any scratches. -or- you could just leave it as is. It's hard to see the stains when the hinges are in place.
MyNameIsNobody Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 I have a better condition replacement with good hinges I would part with. PM me if interested with address and I will send pics.
N201MKTurbo Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 Take them off, use a wire wheel to clean them up and then paint them. Or buy new ones.
N201MKTurbo Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 BTW don't loose the hardware, it is hard to get.
Shadrach Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 Edit. I thought you were talking about the window. My bad. Clean them up and have them rechromed!
Houman Posted November 14, 2015 Author Report Posted November 14, 2015 Thanks for the suggestions, I ended up using a very fine sand paper on the hinges once they were removed and they came out as good as new... I like the idea of painting them, but it will have to wait, I already installed them back... 3
DXB Posted November 15, 2015 Report Posted November 15, 2015 Good idea. Mine look like your before pictures. BTW I love these threads that tell you simple ways to rejuvenate parts of your plane.
