xrs135 Posted October 23, 2015 Report Posted October 23, 2015 Any other Mooney's showing up to the High Sierra fly-in this weekend? I'll be there tomorrow through Sunday morning! If you are concerned about the condition of the lake bed this year, it's smoother than most runways - and dust free! Quote
kmyfm20s Posted October 23, 2015 Report Posted October 23, 2015 I was unaware of it! Can you give us a link? Quote
xrs135 Posted October 23, 2015 Author Report Posted October 23, 2015 Here is a video from a couple years back. Bring food/water/camping supplies. This years' is about a 15min flight North of Reno. For more details check out the facebook group "High Sierra Fly-In" Expecting 100+ planes this year, mostly STOL taildraggers but all types welcome! 1 Quote
kmyfm20s Posted October 24, 2015 Report Posted October 24, 2015 Looks like Stinkbug and I are going to make! 2 more Mooneys on the dirt, should be fun!! 1 Quote
StinkBug Posted October 24, 2015 Report Posted October 24, 2015 I love it when someone sends me a text basically saying "wanna do this really cool thing in like 12 hours?" and I can actually say yes. See you there! 1 Quote
carl Posted October 24, 2015 Report Posted October 24, 2015 Awesome , Wish I were closer. I just shot the whole day watching the many videos ..awesome too carl Quote
Loogie Posted October 24, 2015 Report Posted October 24, 2015 That Maule was lucky not hit the prop, would have been rough fixing a prop strike at 7900msl!! Quote
xrs135 Posted October 25, 2015 Author Report Posted October 25, 2015 Pretty cool to have 4 Mooneys on the lakebed this year!! ...and Bryan wasn't even there! Did you guys have a good flight back this morning? Hopefully you opted for the Central Valley route today. With these winds, the Eastern Sierra was probably rather hellacious!! Maybe next year we can all coordinate a formation arrival and camp next to each other! 1 Quote
kmyfm20s Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 (edited) That was cool, xrs135 I'm glad you posted this event! The airplane drag races was something else and I still think a Mooney could take the big tire on:) Edited October 26, 2015 by kmyfm20s 6 Quote
kmyfm20s Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 Ok, the new format is a little hard for me:) somehow the typing got between the 3rd and 4th picture. Quote
StinkBug Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 That was pretty fun, thanks for letting us know. I also accidentally got a shot of you taking off this morning as we were starting up, I'll try to post it soon. Looked like you were having some fun buzzing the desert floor 1 Quote

Yeah, I'd like to see that! Did you guys hit that massive updraft just southwest of the lakebed on departure? We were climbing at almost 2,000fpm with 135IAS in the C! Quote
kmyfm20s Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 We got bumped around but I think we where after the big stuff. There was a lot complaining on the radios about turbulence. One guy said his dog got pinned to the roof going over that mountain SW of the lake bed. Quote

thinwing Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 Put the canon in that clean Bravo and land it on the dirt next time! How did you get it out there? It weighs 150 lbs..I take the barrel off ,than the wheels leaving the carriage ,so all parts can be padded by tents/sleeping bags etc..and fits on back seat bench or behind front seats.I have a friend that use to go to Burning Man every year with a neighbor. They had a beater camping trailer and bikes and other gear they only used there. He showed me ,after two trips there ,how corroided all the metal parts on trailer running gear, bicycles, stoves ,ice boxes etc...anything that came in contact with that fine alkalye playa dust!!When try to wash it off ,it turns to cement...I didnt want to deal with cleaning out Mooney wheel wells and risk aft subspar corroision...Dead Cow lake (where high sierra was held)surface is that same alkalye concentrate from an evaporated lake bed...thats why when we woke up ,everybody has sore throats or burning eyes etc...so I rented the 172 ,told the owner where I was going and he charged me an extra hundred bucks to wash, change air filter and of course he rented me his oldest 172...it was fun!!
