M20S Driver Posted July 15, 2015 Report Posted July 15, 2015 I bought an external antenna for my Stratus-2 and installed on my Eagle's windshield. Stratus-2 unit sits on the glare shield. As soon as I connect the antenna, I get noise on the frequency of 125.0 (ground at KPAO) on both GNS530 and 430. No other frequency showed this problem. Do we have any hardcore Electrical Engineers who understands why? An antenna usually can not do this level of EMF to be picked up by radios without any electrical source. I have used the Stratus without the antenna for over a year and did not have any issues! Baffled Driver Quote
Jerry 5TJ Posted July 15, 2015 Report Posted July 15, 2015 You got what, an external ADS-B antenna or an external GPS antenna for your Stratus2? Quote

JPI sent me a couple of ferrites to correct my issue. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote

N601RX Posted July 16, 2015 Report Posted July 16, 2015 RF interference is usually found by trial and error. There isn't a simple fix all answer. Try moving the antenna or cable. Quote
FlyDave Posted July 16, 2015 Report Posted July 16, 2015 You need to work with jerry-N5911Q on this! (Just take my word for it...) Quote
M20S Driver Posted July 16, 2015 Author Report Posted July 16, 2015 I moved the antenna to the pilot side window and put the stratus on the carpet, the noise and interference went away. If I lift the stratus by a foot with antenna connected, the interference comes back. It works fine without the antenna with no issues. Quote
M20S Driver Posted July 21, 2015 Author Report Posted July 21, 2015 Update: Talked to Appareo today and they made the suggestion of moving it away from the glare shield. They know about this and don't have a solution other than re-positioning the antenna and Stratus. I would strongly advise against flying hard IFR with the Stratus antenna connected since the sensitivity of the navigation units to this unknown source of noise is not well understood by anyone including Appareo. I did not have any issues with Stratus without the antenna. Quote
Houman Posted July 24, 2015 Report Posted July 24, 2015 ok, then why do you need an antenna ?, I just got the Stratus 2S and was told that I do not need any external antenna's, have had 1 flight of 2h with it fixed on the passenger window behind my head, it worked perfectly as advertised. Quote

I had no issues with noise without the antenna but the reception was terrible around the Sacramento valley. I had to elevate the Stratus on Glare Shield to get a couple of stations. Mounting it to the window works too. Quote
