I cannot believe how many people fly their planes about 4 to 5 hours a year and say that their plane is the best of the best, ,,,after all the paint and interior are like new..............Newsflash !!!   it is not the best of the best    !!!!!

I will take the ugliest plane that flys 10 hours a month over a beauty queen that flys 5 hours a year.........

Rant over.......

I agree, there are many "hangar queens" out there that are more dangerous than ugly planes that get flown regularly.

I learned to fly on 1476U, a nice little 172 with burlap sack interior. When I started out I checked the 172s and wanted to fly the G1000. I made fun of 1476U based on its interior. I changed my tune when I first flew it on my second flight. That airplane is smooth and easy to fly. The G1000 that I flew first was distracting and overkill when I was trying to learn how to land in a crosswind or perform an S turn. Simplicity rules.

Dunno if it's just Mooneys, but half the airplanes I've looked at online were hangar queens, and a couple more nearly qualified.  Just don't understand why anybody'd let their investment sit and depreciate like that.

I think there are 2 main reasons:

1) A current health issue with the hope that it will resolve and they will be granted a medical at some point in the future.

2) Financial hardship. An owner that cannot afford to fly but cannot bear to let go of the identity and the idea that they will once again take to the sky. It's not rational and a case can easily be made that a person who keeps an airplane they can't afford to fly will prolong any financial hardships that are keeping them out of the cockpit.

You forgot:

3) They bought the plane as an "investment" and now that the aircraft market has tanked like Chinese stocks, they cannot sell it for 1/2 of what they have in it.

Asking a bunch of people that have never seen or looked at this plane or the logs is pointless.... It could be great , it could be crap.....Take a look at it , look at the logs , and if warranted get an experienced IA to do a prebuy......Any other advice or info from someone that has not seen or touched or smelled this plane is sheer idiacy....... Except Jose' stating not to buy it cause its older than him.....That is a valid reason.....

I found the same looking for my Mooney.  Just my humble opinion here... but there are three places to find good Mooney's for sale.  In no particular order...

1. Jimmy/David - All American

2. LASAR

3. Right here on MooneySpace

Someone said in a previous thread, there are no "Barn finds" or hidden gems in the used aircraft market.

Just my $0.02

I guess I disagree with the "No barn finds or hidden gems". They are out there; you just have to be willing to take some risk, but they are few and far between. The original plane on this thread might be one of those, but until someone goes and looks at it, negotiates a reasonable price, has an A&P annual it and then flies it for a year we will never know.

I bought mine from a broker that was representing the bank that repossessed it.  They didn’t have the log books and had let it sit on the ramp looking very ugly.  I had found the previous owner and got the logs before I even had the deal closed with the bank, had a great A&P do an inspection as part of the deal.  It was a risk but I tried to limit the risk at each step.  I am very happy with the plane after three years.
