PTK Posted March 31, 2015 Report Posted March 31, 2015 Looks like the Mooney gave the car a nice chew down for standing in the way! Quote
N33GG Posted March 31, 2015 Report Posted March 31, 2015 The article says the engine quit. Maybe so, but the prop was still turning! I guess that counts as a prop strike... Good that nobody was injured. Quote
DrBill Posted March 31, 2015 Report Posted March 31, 2015 By the looks of the stripes, it sure does look like the engine WAS running when it hit the car. Quote

So does the car owners agent get involved with the airplane insurance? Quote

Hank Posted April 1, 2015 Report Posted April 1, 2015 That's alright, Marauder has lots of flour. And look, only one girl is actually sitting on the truck, so the suspension is unharmed. This time. Quote

If you hit a car head on you are dead, likely the occupants of the car as well. The wingspan of a Mooney is 33', a lot wider than a 2-lane highway so if anything hits the wing, it steers the plane into an obstacle. Another chance to be killed. The other thing is, you signed up for GA and all the risks that entails. The occupants of the cars on the highway didn't get that choice. 2 Quote
Ned Gravel Posted April 1, 2015 Report Posted April 1, 2015 I am with Byron on this one. I won't blame anyone for making that choice, but I will not do it myself unless....... and there are a lot of caveats. For me, it is way better in the field beside the highway. Those folks on the highway did not sign up for this. If I recall correctly, our duty to protect is, in order: people on the ground, then people in the aircraft, then property on the ground, then our aircraft. Again, no blame for someone making that decision - I was not there. But it would not be my first choice. Quote
aviatoreb Posted April 1, 2015 Report Posted April 1, 2015 I think it depends - as usual - it always depends. Some highways, like the ones around here, can be incredibly sparse with cars, and there is plenty of space between cars. A rural superhighway throughway. A packed LA freeway is the other end of the scale. Also obviously better to go in the direction of the flow rather than head on. If it is a big divided high, I could see coming in, finding too many cars, and then choosing the grass between or the sides as a last second alternate. At least help would be nearby. Quote
