Went to Hilton Head to visit a friend this weekend. Monday morning we flew up about 1-2 miles off the coast to KMQI and stayed at Manteo. Everyone who has an opportunity should fly the outer banks. I have done it with and without flight following and once at 500-1000 feet the whole way. Flying into and visiting KFFA is a must.

Here is a pic from yesterday. Hope it uploads and comes out OK.post-8279-0-20217100-1411519341_thumb.jp

There are so many MOAs and restricted airspace thru the outerbanks, who where you talking to on radio or what consideration did you give to them? Thanks, I really would love to do that to.

I've flown around the area, but not straight up it. I'd be curious to know who you talk to as well. Sometimes, though, it's just seems complicated for a lazy afternoon flight, so I just kinda pop in and out of the outer banks, weaving my way around MOAs or making separate flights out of it. It is really gorgeous. And your comment about FFA...totally agree.

Just get flight following. They will keep you safe. Wilmington Approach, Seymour Johnson, then Cherry Point had me until Cape Hatteras. No radar after Hatteras so they dropped me, but I talked to Washington Center who could not see me on radar. They just told me sections of R-5313 were active and to stay east of ZOLMN intersection. That was it. We saw an aircraft carrier and some other warships around Cape Lookout.

It's a beautiful flight, but if found myself always looking for a spot to land just in case. The over water "Auto-Rough" feature for my IO360 was working well yesterday.

Best I can remember I called the controlling agencies to make sure when I did it 500-1000 feet and about a mile off the coast. They won't see you on radar very much if you are that low.

I flew to KFFA from the North (Williamsburg).  Was in VA for a weekend and we decided to go to FFA for the day.. Was a nice flight along the coast and back.  A great tour of the facility.  I'd go again.  That was my first time since I was 10 and went with my folks.
