hi guys

i'm a new pilot under 100 hours lookin for my first plane been doing a lot research talking to a lot of people ...basically the insurence companys are kind of dicatating what i can buy ...pretty much got it down to an ovation  a dakota  and maybe a 350 cessna..i have some missions that are new england to texas or flordia or kentucky so the extra 50 knots over the dakota would be really great with two too three people onboard....the problem is that i really like the ovation but people keep on warning me off about parts problems wait times and costs for these planes....can you guys help???  do ovations have the same airframe as the new acclaim in production

any help appreciated

The Ovation and Acclaim airframes are of the same lineage , Mooney is back in production , The delays should be a non issue moving forward ..... These airframes are pretty robust , should not be a parts whore, but only time will tell ....

Parts will be the least of your concerns with an Ovation.  Getting more experience and an instrument rating will be the biggest hurdle to cross before doing big trips like that.  Insurance in any Mooney will go down dramatically after you add the IR.

Get educated...

You are hearing what is called old wives tales....

Did you talk to any Ovation owners?

Ovations are great. Experience is important. Don't rush.

Find out what a PPI is about.

You can skip these details, it just becomes more expensive.

If you have enough dough, go directly to the front of the line and order one from the factory....get the factory training that I am sure will come with it.

Good luck.

How does an insurance company dictate what you can buy?

Are they pushing you towards an O?

Older Ovations cost $200k. Experienced pilot with IR will get insurance for about $2,000 (roughly).

Monthly cost is about $1150 for the bird and insurance.

Having less experience will cost more for insurance. Because you are a higher risk, no?

How does that sound?

The worst thing you might run into with non-G1000 Ovations would be the engine instruments (do a search here).  Worst case, budget for a modern engine monitor that can replace the obsolete and expensive factory equipment.  Everything else is easy to get IMO.

I visited the Mooney factory today and was told that customer needed parts take precedence over most everything they do.

I believe the only difference between the Ovation and the Acclaim airframe is the wing tips and cowling. Anybody know otherwise?
