I have a Electronic analog OAT gauge on the left top of my panel but it doesn't read correctly. The plane was repainted and windshields were changed over two years ago. Not sure if it worked before tha,t since I just bought the plane. Anyway, maybe the probe is not where it's suppose to be. For a while I thought it was under the left wing near the root but yesterday I read that the static drain was what I was looking at.

Mine is under the right wing, out beyond the landing gear in an access cover. It protrudes thru the access cover about 1/4" inch. Lee

Thanks Lee, I have a M20J also. I'll check under the right wing. I hope I can find a broken wire or something and get the temp gauge to read right.

I just swapped mine out for a Davtron, same problem, and it wasn't connectivity. I think the probe was the culprit. I talked to the company that manufactured the gauge and they couldn't point me to a suitable replacement probe. Install of the Davtron was not exactly easy because the amount of wire supplied is insufficient to reach the same place under the right wing and the davtron uses 3-conductor shielded wire, so you can't reuse the wire that is there.

I extended the davtron oat wire to reach the clock. It's simple, solder some additional shielded 3-conductor wire to it.

The T probe will look like a castle nut on a panel on the right hand side wing.

Any reason why the probe is on the right hand side wing rather than the left ?

the OAT gauge on the stock J is on the left of the panel .... the wire has to run across the cabin. Panels are the same foot print and can be swapped.

of course, the left wing has more stuff in it ( pitot, stall warning, autopilot servo) but i am not sure a few feet of wire will make a difference. what am i missing ?

Byron,

You are confusing me...

The OAT is a thermocouple, no?

Extending thermocouple wires should take specific TC wires to make the extensions.

Then again, thermocouples usually aren't three wires either...

What did I miss?

In '94, the OAT probe is tiny. Mounted on the right wing. Not shiny like a traditional chromed probe.

Best regards,

the thermocouple+sensor leads assembly cannot be changed but the wires that connect the assembly to the indicator can be changed ( 0 resistance)

for example in a type K egt probe , you cannot change the length of the yellow and red leads.

Thanks OR.

I was thinking the thermocouple wires went all the way to the instrument panel.

I've got some studying to work on...

Lee, I found the sensor under the right wing just as you said. it has been painter over, would that mess up the readings? Should I scrape the paint off the tip?

The paint could act as an insulator and cause a reading error. I would use a hard plastic scraper so as to not damage the probe. Lee

I agree with what Lee said, but be prepared to replace the entire system... these things don't last forever.  I replaced my original with a Davtron M655 multi-function unit and couldn't be happier.  I installed the probe in the left wing, opposite of the factory location in the right wing.  I'm planning to add a JPI OAT probe in the right wing location soon when I upgrade my engine monitor.

Good suggestion, I'll try to clean it. I have a timer above the analog OAT meter and it's dead. Haven't tried to pull it out since it's a pain to gain access and I think it doesn't have nut plates on the back.
