Mooney M20M GX Bravo Prebuy - LPC Aviation
Marauder replied to JJV7109's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I think a lot depends on how much travel you are doing in the summer and where on the east coast. My F will get up to 12k and that is usually enough for the majority of the weather (and certainly the terrain) found on the east coast. Where the benefit, aside of the winds, is on those hot summer days where operating at 14 to 16k will give you a better view of the building cumulus and when you are going over the higher terrain along the Appalachians. -
I have an STEC 60-2. I don't know if the 50 series can do the vertical guidance of an approach. I know the 55, 55X and 60 series can do vertical and horizontal guidance. I wonder what will be happening to all of those 55, 55X and 60-2 units that get upgraded to 3100s?

The ELT shouldn't go off with the antenna removal. Based on the rust I am seeing, I think I would using some penetrate on it might help (I like SeaFoam's Deep Creep). I would think there is a backing nut on the avionics side of the connection that could be used to prevent it from spinning.

Aviation Videos -- Audio How To?
Marauder replied to Marauder's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
This test was using the Power Mic setting. I did hit the squelch on Com 2 to see if the IntelliAudio on the PS Engineering 450B worked. It did! And it sounds like it is coming through as stereo.- 7 replies

I know a few of you have made aviation related videos. I have as well. I decided to make more videos and upgrade my GoPro 2 to a couple of GoPro 5 Blacks. The GoPro 2 audio cable that I had been using was really robust and the audio quality was exceptional. I bought what I thought was an audio kit for the 5 Blacks and am having a bear of a time figuring out how to get it to work correctly. I purchased this from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MT3Q50Y/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Visiting the GoPro site, I see what I bought was an external microphone adapter that GoPro sells for connecting to external mics and that Nflightcam attaches their audio cable to it. I found one Amazon commenter who said Nflightcam told him to use the line in for the audio input (like GoPro provides several options for mics when you connect the adapter). Like the commenter, I found the volume was extremely low. Haven't put it through the editor yet to see how much I can boost it. There are a number of other input settings (Std Mic, Power Mic, Power Mic+, etc), but they all have an annoying background noise. In addition, I found that when using the USB-C charging cable input, it would charge if the GoPro was off, once powered, the battery was no longer charging. Here is an example video using one of the audio input settings. If you listen closely, you can hear the background static. I will post a couple others as well when I upload them.

iPad Mini4 vs bigger or wait for a the mini 5
Marauder replied to Seth's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Better than the $27 they offered me for my iWatch 2.0. They sure take your money fine, but have a hard time giving any of it back, don't they? -
I having given up on Peter Garmin Part Deux, but have cooked up a nice dish for him.

So, one of you go out and buy one so I can decide if my year old iPad Mini 4 should be traded in. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro -
The one I bought is a 35 EZ. The predecessor to the 40 EZ. Other than a larger engine, they are essentially the same. The gas powered ones are pretty powerful. The one I bought certainly has more power than needed to move an F model. I suspect they put a bigger engine on it for heavier airplanes. I have an original Lug Bug (two wheel drive). It moves the plane at half of the speed of this 35 EZ. The downside of the single wheel drive is traction on wet or snow covered ramps. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Already there. -
We’re in a different world with ADS-B. The test protocols that we can do should tell us the health status of every flight that our ADS-B solution populates when in the system. I would use the FAA site to look at previous flights to see which ones failed and the reason they failed. https://adsbperformance.faa.gov/paprrequest.aspx This should help both Avionix and your aviation shop understand what failed. The value add of an iWatch is just the ability not to dig out the iPhone when stuff happens. When I am sitting waiting for a commercial flight, having flight status updates tossed up on the watch is nice. As is getting directional information from Apple Maps. Those are the kinds of things a conventional watch can't do. But I agree with you about the charge cycles and the pain in the arse traveling with the charging stuff for it. I'm sure they are working on a nuclear powered model -

I will tell you one thing about "deep" pockets. There was a stainless Apple Watch at the Apple Visitor Center with some sort of designer band being sold for $1500!!! -
Yeah, I really like the leather but I found I like the sheepskin even more. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

Shop around. A professional shop will run you in the $4k range for leather. Some of these shops have slow periods and you might be able to cut a deal for less. Make sure the shop can provide the burn certificates. Mine were redone with new memory foam, new headrests made for the back and oversized ones made for the front. I also had new pockets made for the top of the seat backs. Mine were done during the summer (their slow time) and while my plane was in for annual. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

Something isn’t configured or wired correctly. The bank angle is set to standard rate so you shouldn’t see 45°. When I first got my Aspen, it took me a little time to figure out how GPSS worked and even though I had been using the heading bug (with auto-slewing off), I was actually flying GPSS when I was intending to fly heading mode only. Where I am headed with this is whether or not what you are seeing is related to pilot configurable settings and not the installation. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

The Mooney next to me went out of annual and he needed a ferry permit to get it to the shop. If someone doesn’t respond on this site, I would call the local FSDO and explain the situation and ask how to handle the ferry permit. That’s what the owner did next to me and they were extremely helpful on the process (and this was the Philly FSDO). Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

SOLD. I bought it. It wasn’t running when I picked it up but was able to get it running this afternoon. Gummy bears removed. Kind of sad transfer of ownership. C owner selling all of his stuff and getting out of aviation. Not that much older than me. [emoji22] Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

You tell me. I was talking to someone who named your airline as one that might have been impacted by the grounding. Does your airline have that many in the fleet? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Looking over the FlightAware data it is clear there was a control issue going on. Pretty significant heading changes and some altitude and airspeed anomalies. If the cause was a failed AI, it is indeed sad if no backup AI was available to the pilot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

iPad Mini4 vs bigger or wait for a the mini 5
Marauder replied to Seth's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
It’s actually a whole series of displays that work in unison and were seamless (i.e. the lines you see in the picture below are actually the seams in the windows across the visitor center and lighting brackets on the ceiling). What was really cool was that the Apple rep in the picture below was showing us photo taking features and this was someone in the audience he was shooting and having show up on the screen behind him. I was at the Apple Visitor Center yesterday and tried to pry out information on any new Mini ipads. Those guys must have been Russian spies in a former life. Not even a glint of a smirk or wink. -
