  1. Where did you read that? The Dynon website points to the D-2 as the substitute for the D-1. I am pretty happy with the D-2. http://www.dynonavionics.com/discontinued-product.php
  2. True. I could be happy with a 252 right about now. Not that the J isn't great!
  3. Thanks to Phil, Mike and everyone else who helped organize this event. Nicely done! The Estrella Warbird museum was definitely worth a visit as well.
  4. A 2000W Sportsman inverter for $149 https://www.walmart.com/ip/Sportsman-Gasoline-2000W-Portable-Generator/46542330
  5. Last evening/night was the worst possible time to be up in the air in the SF Bay area region. It was not a cold storm, but very heavy precipitation.
  6. What I do is to hold onto the throttle friction lock assembly (not the throttle black knob itself). I know I can hold my weight with my fingers tightly on the back of the friction lock on a climb out. I can then let go of the yoke with my left hand if the seat slips back and pull myself forward with my right hand (without killing the throttle). Other ideas to restrict the movement of the pilot's seat are definitely worth considering.
  7. I have never been in ice, glad you made it through. A good learning experience no doubt! Thanks for posting.
  8. Never usually happens on the first approach since the damn thing won't slow down without gear down - more likely on a go-around/multiple approaches or pattern work when one is not really flying fast to notice. So I do check twice or more for gear down.
  9. Registered for 1. Maybe 1+1 if I find a companion. Thanks for hosting!
  10. Perhaps the following route (or variations thereof) would have mitigated the risks somewhat? The "night" factor is another unknown making both choices equally bad I guess (mountains/trees vs. water/ice landing).
  11. I have had a tough time getting a medium sized rigid kennel into the back seat for PnP flights. I have had to partially disassemble it. I relegate myself to cats or smaller dogs these days.
  12. I try to avoid KPAO as much as possible except to pick up passengers and leave immediately! KSQL as others have mentioned is much nicer.
  13. I was there about 4 months ago. Couldn't get a signal on my cellphone (T-mobile) to try and get Uber, so rented a beat up car at Air Galore and drove into Mendocino for the day.
  14. Seems like a small frequency difference between the G5 display and the camera (GoPro?). The G5 fades out every few seconds!
  15. I could make it... no plans to add anything right now but would like to see what I am going to be missing! Sent from my ONEPLUS A3000 using Tapatalk
  16. I think hybrid electric engines are the stop gap measure till planes get to be fully battery powered once energy densities of batteries go up even more. With an hours worth of battery run time, a rugged light bulletproof AC motor (like in EVs), an optimized engine driving a non-prop load at a fixed RPM, efficiencies and reliabilities can go up significantly. No more worries about losing an engine. The only thing to worry about would be stupid pilot tricks such as flying into bad weather/terrain, poor airmanship (probably preventable as well with electronics), mid-air collisions etc.
  17. Perhaps choose four locations (two in Central CA, one in Northern, one in Southern) and rotate between them. Those can make it, will, others can find the next one. Too large a group to make everyone happy. I am fine so far with any of the dates proposed in April. Thanks for taking the trouble.
  18. I went with the Garmin GTN 650 and GDL-88 setup with the old KT-76A transponder. If I had the room, I would have gone with the GTN 750 as well. This was over 4 years ago when Avidyne was vaporware. Garmin Pilot is great and is getting more and more powerful in terms of capability. Syncs well with all the other Garmin devices (incl. a D2 Bravo watch). With the Onepak NA subscription, it isn't that expensive as it used to be (incl. databases for the Garmin 696).
  19. Passed the CPL yesterday. The new ACS has made it a fairly long and arduous test. The tough ones on the flight test are the eights-on-pylons and the 180 deg. accuracy landings (according to the DPE, and he was right). Please PM me for details if you want to know more.
  20. KPRB sounds good. Interestingly, never landed there, only flown over it many times!
  21. 33k if I am not mistaken. Oops, 38k (corrected, used sm instead of nm!)
  22. Rough running engine on take off run (one cylinder lost compression). Aborted take off. This was at dusk making it even more exciting! Flaps stuck down (limit switch issue) Intermittent charging due to frayed wire to alternator field.
  23. Here's another suggestion. I have never been to Kern Valley (L05) but I am sure our Southern California folk could comment on whether it's worth flying into. Thanks.
  24. I would prefer a different destination having been here several times over the past year or so - I'll pass on this one and wait for the next outing. Have fun!
  25. That's perfectly reasonable for higher than average speeds. I was talking about drivers braking any time they see a curve even on freeways :-)
