  1. And you can also buy an aerostar at that price point and yet its not the right plane for many people. Sometimes I get tempted and think, gee - whiz - twin. And for me, a twin would be either B55 or ... in even my crazier moments - aerostar. So what I do is put my head between my knees and rock back and forth until that feeling passes. That's worked for me so far. I can't say if it will work forever.
  2. I have adsb in/out for about 4 years . I am convinced most traffic near misses we never saw or knew about before with the looking out the window alone method. I am convinced it happened all the time and only good luck and big sky saved us. Adsb doesn't replace but it does augment looking out the window.
  3. Hey Andy, Yah - I know. ... I figure the president walks across the football field at half time so as not to show favoritism, so why shouldn't I? I always figure thought that thanks for your service is for the guys and gals in uniform - not for me. I just taught math to you guys! Actually - in fact - there was one prominent Mooneyspacer who was in my calculus class at one the Academies once upon a time. Andy, thank you for YOUR service!
  4. Well - I wasn't in the military - not in uniform but I was "nearby". I was a professor at USMA from 95-97 then at USNA from 97-02. So go Army AND NAVY!
  5. I get tired crossing the Atlantic back in coach in a 787 by the time I get to my 3rd movie and my legs are stiff....
  6. Epoxy - but clean well with alcohol / but after 5 years it did fall off - I got a new button and it came with a really sticky epoxy tape - much cleaner. important to take the arm off carefully by holding the button to the headset each time i love oxyarm!
  7. That makes me a weardos too. I had QT for about 2 years, but after awhile I realized I really like my Bose A20 more. Besides that, there are two other factors in favor of QT. 1) When it is winter, it can be very cold sticking a little foamy - or rubber thing - in your ear. Try going to your hangar when it is -20F and sticking something in your ear! 2) I use oxyarm for which the ball sits on my A20 all the time, and I attach the swinging arm as needed - so when using O2, this barely touches my nose if at all with no tugging.
  8. Huh - does the same logic allow me to use a flag and flag pole to attack a bus load of nuns with the pointy end of the stick but to declare that its all ok because we all love the flag?
  9. Who did that stc interior mod for you? I want to get that installed too.
  10. Yup - that's the way - what I was trying to say. I bet that's one sweet engine.
  11. Ah - that's quite true - Continental cylinders are crap. Its well documented - its the fit and finish of the valves are low quality when factory new. The trick that seems to work, so says lots of anecdote is to never use factory new continental cylinders. Rather, either use another brand of cylinders and or have them rehoned by a boutique top tier shop even though they are new. With this I have read that many people run tbo on their cylinders. That's a major nuisance, I know. But there that's a solution. Once you have a good setup, the continental is a sweet running engine. Another consideration in this discussion if just discussing engines, the lycoming TIO540 is dramatically more expensive to overhaul than the Tsio520 or tsio550. Something like 20k more isn't it? That said, I wouldn't turn my nose up to an overall good M20M if I were shopping, not for a second.
  12. I've been in a Bravo - no knocks. But curious Dan - what is your obvious reason for Lycoming over continental?
  13. I am not sure which I am more worried (disgusted) by this change in BK policy. -Overpriced work - significantly -Using federal law in a monopoly play to put other business out of business -Now to be long delays -A reputation and many stories that suggests that despite long waits and massive price increases, that the work quality will be exceedingly poor. E.g. Bennet's story of a backwards wired dangerous servo, or Byron's story about incorrect work. Sure Garmin has a flat rate policy but at least the price is not absurd even if it is expensive, and even more important, the reputation is for accurate reliable repairs. But yeah many of us are currently married to BK - the autopilot and servos, even if we change out the primary instruments (aka Garmin g500 or aspen) we still can't get away from many of the BK autopilot parts. I am definitely hoping that this year's oshkosh will reveal some kind of alternative will arise, and if so I will likely have such an upgrade in my path within a year, or first failure of BK part - whichever comes first. Hoping for trutrek or the like. And some kind of experimental to certified instrumentation to drive it. Looks like the end of the road for fine swiss watch mechanical equipment has about arrived thanks to BK the company. Expensive because its aviation, ok, I signed up for that and its annoying when an unexpected expensive repair comes, but it happens. But this BK maneuver, is insulting, and I am not one to take kindly to such extortion and manipulation.
  14. I would not be looking forward to a day when every bridge I drive over I need to stop and pay a toll. Every road I drive down, I need to stop and pay a toll. Every public bathroom I find, I need a dollar (like in Europe...). I mean, money aside, what a pain in the neck that is. I prefer the alacarte plan buffet. One price and you get to drive over all the bridges and go pee in all the public toilets. We pay one way or another so don't bother me to ask for a bill for every single little thing. Same with ATC. If they need more money, then fine, raise the fuel tax but don't send me a bill in the mail for talking to ATC. Plus a lot of people will try to hide from the fee by either not talking to ATC or .. not flying.
  15. I'm on FB so I can cyber-watch my kids...
  16. I've got dog muffs, but what I would love to see is a clarity aloft canine setup!
  17. I nominate for the best first timer post prize.
  18. I was thinking of getting one of those soft crates whose frame structure gardens as you blow up like a blow up raft. To make for even easier in and out through the door without scuffing anything.
  19. Interesting - flourcarbon is popular in the most expensive "race waxes" in cross country skiing and the appllcation procedures are arduous and require a lot of elbow grease. But the stuff is amazing.
  20. It's good to be the king.
  21. Cool! In fact I have a flight booked for late June from Montreal to Amsterdam on KLM already!
  22. Nice. So what's next? Will you make a cowling cover for your other Mooney fans?
  23. Hi - I hope you took cruise speed and engine ops (temps etc) data before the change and that you will take it again after. We are all very interested. In a separate note - if you were to make a comparable setup for the next generation of Mooneys that would fit my airplane - I would be interested. A rocket version? (It would need bigger breathing holes) but wow that would make quite the acclaim look. Of course it would be a pain to actually do it since the cowl is only 2 piece instead of 3.
  24. ...its a good deal!
