  1. Whoooo...you're gonna crack open the forums with this discussion as there will be a number of opinions. Personally, I've gone the whole evolution, Used to land full flaps most of the time and only used no flaps when strong (+15kts) crosswinds were present. When I started commercial training my habit pattern switched to using flaps only after the runway landing point was assured. And with that I would sometimes land with no flaps, half or full flaps. Ultimately this was a function of how strong the wind was even if I adjusted my base turn accordingly. Ultimately you just have to be aware of the impact of your flap selection to your sink rate, approach/landing attitude, float and elevator sensitivity. I learned quickly that with no flaps, near the bottom of the backside of the power curve (or no power curve) a little extra pitch could induce a pretty hefty sink rank even in ground effect. I would suggest you practice each of the configurations and get a feel for each. Then hopefully you'll feel comfortable adjusting your flap usage based on conditions at the time.
  2. As an aberration, I was practicing possible turns 2 days ago. Taking off one runway performing a right 90, left 270 and touching down where I took off and then doing the same the opposite direction. I swear I could click off one of those a touch and go every 90 seconds. I completed my instrument and commercial last year driving my ratio higher than average and have a 4 landings per hour (lph) over 200 hrs for 2020. I blame it all on MS and youtube...
  3. Good to know...perhaps you can find one big enough for you and your family That would get you around your conundrum provided it was possible/legal.
  4. Not a dumb question but a very good one indeed. As I read above I think the specific issue is that the OPs Temporary Airman Certificate - Commercial Pilot is going to lapse as it is only good for 120 days from issue. While you can have a commercial certificate and not exercise the associated privileges and therefore not need the associated class 2 or higher medical. However, in this case when he received his interim his PP certificate was likely invalidated and had a hole punched in it leaving him at the mercy of the temporary airman certificate. Line 5 of his temp certificate reads: "It becomes void -- 5. in any case, at the expiration of 120-days from date of issuance." Hopefully Sheriff's link helps.
  5. Bite the bullet PJ. The load shed, quality of light output and confidence in operation will be worth it. You'll spend as much to install the new one as you would having the A&P troubleshoot the current one.
  6. @carusoamHere's what Kathryn's report notes: The pilot-rated owner reported that he was allowing another pilot to build time in his airplane to qualify for the airplane's insurance. During the accident flight, the pilot occupied the left seat, and the owner occupied the right seat. During takeoff after a touch-and-go landing, the pilot rotated a bit early, and the airplane settled back onto the runway. He aborted the takeoff, applied heavy braking, and the airplane fishtailed and then veered left. The owner took the flight controls, but the airplane exited left of the runway and impacted a ditch. The pilot reported that, during the familiarization flight to practice touch-and-go landings, on the second takeoff, he aborted the takeoff because he realized that he did not have enough runway available. He applied heavy braking, and the airplane veered left into a swamp. The owner added that he was sitting in the right seat and that the right seat position does not have brakes. He believed that his "inexperience at controlling the airplane from the right seat" also contributed to the accident. Sad indeed. We gotta keep our fleet well loved and intact!
  7. Had a chance to stop by the airport today to snap a picture of my current airport mate. I would love to fly a 201. The Reaper says it's repairable....would still require a lot of love.
  8. That's a good thought. A basic Garmin package is not far from Dynon costs. Regardless, bite the bullet once and get more capability and ease of use. And you only have to apologize once to your significant other!
  9. @carusoam -a- I just saw your question from some time ago I have no analog left and yes I'd very much entertain an Electroair 13000 switch. Time may yield such a change. Need a GFC-500 first!
  10. My experience flying a couple of different C's and an E mirrors your experience--stalls are predictable, telegraphed and are a non-event if handled correctly. I do tend to get reminded of the L/D profile when I go beyond the "normal landing pitch" due to an early round out and the sink rate gets aggressive...but again no stall.
  11. Have you considered a GNX 375? If you are set on the G3X & GFC 500, the -375 is a perfect navigator and works well. Of course you may need the comm functionality the IFD provides but the G3X permits remote radio and intercom making a very slick setup. I originally wanted an Avidyne, Aspen and PS Engineering setup but I found all the same offered in a Big G config for a little less money overall.
  12. Up until the Fall we had 3 at DAW and only 1 was flying--mine. Now we're down to 2. Sadly, the 201 has seen better days at this point.
  13. The approach to Caveman doesn't; look bad at on the video at all. Thanks for sharing.
  14. @neilpilot stole my #1 checklist item -- johnson bar gear. #2 hydraulic flaps. #3 (which is not compatible is #1 and #2) would be a 252 Encore. Ahhhh--what to do? Good luck. It will be a great journey Have fun!
  15. You gonna fly in there? Post a video if you do. I think it would be sporty for an approach in a Mooney. Looks like a strong cliff face on the opposite side of the river. It may not be that big of a deal to fly the river and land but I'd like to see it done in something other than a bush plane. The sandbar looks nice as well.
  16. Congrats--you're both lucky and happy. Be sure to get the new owner on MS ASAP!
  17. Just a bystander in this case, but I think before you can cast such aspersions you need to consider one's entire body of work. I do hope Mooney is back in production. I wish I could trade my C even for the unpainted Ultra
  18. Damnnnnn. So jealous!
  19. I've had the EDM in vertical and horizontal installation. I'm currently horizonal as seen below, but my preference is vertical.
  20. Go G3X--pay once and go awesome.
  21. I can't believe this hasn't sold yet...GLWS on this awesome bird.
  22. I use Halos with custom molded ear pieces that I got at OSH. These are better than any NR over the ear headset I've ever used. Good luck.
  23. I thought that as well but I have been very happy with the integrated comms in the G world. It makes everything sync seamlessly. I actually had a PS engineering BT intercom that I was going to install but, again, have no regrets. Agree with this point as well. I spent in the $30s for a new panel being cut, JPI relocation, G3X, GNX375 + two remote radios and some antennas. And some other tidbits that made sense that I have since forgot about. Here's a before and after:
