  1. I guess we will have to wait and see what they do. That would be an over-complicated approach and could result in unnecessary cost. The original bulb is essentially a standard projector bulb with the reflector cut down. The most direct replacement would continue to use the same projector bulb shape so it fits in the same hole. This is not a landing light, its more like a navigation light. It only needs a couple emitters, or if you want something easy to find - a T15 reverse bulb. I agree that some of Whelen's products are great and their customer support is good - I have a full set of Orions and got to exercise their warranty. But some of the pricing is nutty. $270 for a recognition light would be nutty. Over $2000 for a beacon replacement is nutty.
  2. $269 for what amounts to a $9 LED reverse light in an injection molded package is steep even for an aviation upgrade. The tail strobe is $400 and that comes in a machined aluminum housing with a glass cover, has more emitters and more functions. My CB might be coming out, but this should be $99 tops.
  3. If you haven't done this, I suggest that you do. My plane was not idle, though the usage was down the last few years before I bought it. Turns out the lifters were garbage and they scored the cam. I got to do an unplanned overhaul. This would have been caught easily if the lifters had been pulled and looked at for the cost of probably only a couple hours labor.
  4. I had dual G5s and the GFC500 autopilot installed and it wasn't much more than two GI-275s and keeping the old autopilot. I've seen numbers around $15k for a dual GI-275 install. A G5 HSI with 29B is about $3k worth of hardware and figure probably another $3k for install. You need the temp widget for winds and TAS I think either way. I have it and get both on the G5s. The path you propose will take longer and cost you more in the end. I have a whole KFC-225 system in a box including the KI-256 if you need any pieces to support this upgrade plan.
  5. If you want GPSS today and you plan garmin in the future, the G5 HSI with a 29B is probably your most bang for the buck. The only scenario where you need a 275 is the one where your 256 kicks the bucket and you don't want to do any other upgrades. If you are going to update the autopilot, it can be driven by a G5 or a G3x. If the autopilot kicks it, and you don't want to do the G3x, then you get one more G5 and the GFC500 and ditch the vacuum system. If the autopilot kicks it and you do want the G3x (or G500), then the G5 HSI slides over to be the backup and you ditch the vacuum system.
  6. Not sure if its the same as the one that came on my ovation, but be careful when you take the bulb out. That colored lens will suddenly liberate itself from the wing tip and if it hits the floor it will cost you $40-80 depending on how good you are at ebay.
  7. I'm hoping the MAPA seminar runs in September. Otherwise, I might have to find some rando and get one this year.
  8. His engine is not sagging. This is just how ovations look especially with that spinner. I replaced all my mounts when I overhauled my engine - it sits in exactly the same spot. I don't know if it can be shimmed, don't think so.
  9. Are you sure its actively rubbing? I had some wear show up that we couldn't explain, repaired and it hasn't come back. After the fact, I remembered that I had the prop balanced while some other work was being done and I wasn't there to watch. My unproven theory is that they ran the engine with the top cowl off and it pushed up and rubbed.
  10. I'm sure you did this too, but update the software in the G5. I had a small oscillation in the IAS climb and on the glideslope. Updating the software fixed it for me. I think there were updates very recently that improved some hunting behaviors.
  11. Did Geebee make the door seal mold? At one point I thought there was a thread about getting enough interest to make the extrusion. Don't know where that ended up.
  12. Curious how this turns out. I'd have flown the heading of the runway I was on and I'd be surprised if that wasn't the right answer. Controllers make mistakes too.
  13. The plug could be anywhere but the most common location is by the oil door. The next time you an oil change look for the wire and follow it.
  14. This. And send them your old ones to replicate. They have a library of what worked for others but invariably you may have some different configuration.
  15. My original plan was to alternate a local owner assist with an MSC. I am very happy I did the first couple (to include an unplanned overhaul) with a local IA in my hangar - I learned a lot. I have since moved and have not found a similar IA where I can do that. The local shops on the field don't want to do an owner assist and don't even like coming down to the hangar no matter how simple the task may be. I also found @AGL Aviation and now go out of my way to see them. I'm very happy with the work they've done; their prices are fair; and they don't seem to mind too much if I poke around and ask questions while the plane is opened up.
  16. I like it. A customer / community first approach is nice to see. I assume more details about what is on offer to buy will follow. The service center list looks like it is going through a website update but the contact info to the service centers is there. Perhaps its not made explicit enough, but I think Mooney has always sold parts through the MSCs.
  17. Did you do this? https://download.aopa.org/advocacy/2019/190124_temporary_certificates.pdf
  18. Also. if they have processed it and just not mailed your new card, you might be able to print out a new temporary here: https://amsrvs.registry.faa.gov/amsrvs/Logon.asp
  19. Where is that in the FAR? Your certificate was superseded but your private certificate was not suspended or revoked. You might not be able to exercise the commercial privileges if your temporary expires and your permanent does not arrive, but it would be an absurd result if your private certificate somehow stopped existing without due process. I can't find anything in the FAR and can only find this policy notice. https://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Notice/N_8900.490.pdf
  20. Where does it say in the FAR that a hole punch invalidated his private pilot certificate? I'd be willing to bet if you check the airman registry that he still has a private pilot certificate.
  21. As soon as you pop out and know landing is assured, if the wings are clean you aren't in icing anymore. Hit the speed brakes, slow down to flap speed, get the flaps out. A no flap landing at 120 knots over the fence would need space shuttle like distances.
  22. Sometimes I wonder if there would be a market for a pitot tube cover with a little parachute so it rips off if someone forgets.
  23. Lee is great and I would also suggest Will Wobbe. Not knocking Mike, but you may want more instruction than just the flight home so it would be of benefit to get to know Will and/or Lee.
  24. If you do a cabin preheat, how much a difference does it make after you have the baggage door and cabin door open to load up? I've thought about this before but assumed I'd just lose all the heat packing the plane anyway.
  25. Mine was also installed at the factory and it just doesn't say. All I have is an original empty weight. I'll look again next time I'm out at the plane.
