Anyone know any details about the plane that went down today near N72?
-
Sounds like @StevenL757 has one that came out of a Mooney. But if his doesn't work out and you end up getting one of unknown origin, be sure to check the part number very closely. Had my pitch servo rebuild and my avionics guy was telling me that as it gets tougher to find the motors or parts, he's finding a fair number of people bringing their planes in to have the servos rebuilt, only to find they're the wrong part for the plane their flying. So he can't reinstall it.

Hmm... I'd go with typo, but would even consider they were hacked. Do they even still offer the KI-256 if someone wanted to buy one new? There are a lot of ways to test websites. You don't need to make the page public if you don't want to. Or you can have it on a separate site if you need people to review/test it.

I would agree with a steady crosswind. But when you're getting and then loosing strong gusts, I think all bets are off. Suddenly loosing 6-10+ kts of wind when trying to get the wing to stop flying is always a potential issue.
-
@JimBGetting back to the 45 degrees G35 for a minute... If you're not used to strong crosswinds and gusts up to 35kts, just remember if you're not happy, go around and try it again. I had one heck of a time the other day with the winds 20 something with G35. It took a lot of rudder to keep straight. All was good until I was a few feet above the runway and... the Gust stopped Gusting! Dropped and got a good bounce! It was a nice long runway but this was not a day I was going to try and save it with those gusts. Second time around I still had to work for it, but the landing was fine.

The ADS-B issue is not so much about if she did it or not. Her license was revoked because of the ADS-B issue and a reg that came in with the introduction of ADS-B. I believe she admitted flying under the bridge from the very beginning. The FAA refers to "people on the ground" so I'm guessing there is also a photo and/or recording of the event. But instead of getting a suspension, she got the full revocation of her certificate due to the ADS-B issue. Is the FAA trying to make an example? Who knows, but it sure wouldn't surprise me.

Need a *local* ferry pilot for a long-body mooney in/near northern NJ
PeteMc replied to rbp's topic in General Mooney Talk
Agreed. I know some people in NJ that also might fit the bill. But not know what it is, none of us can really reach out to contacts. Doesn't really matter if it medical and you need a CFI(I) with your or some other reason. But some more details would help. -
I wonder where the cross over point is in days for how much they WOULD have made if I visited the state and paid for hotel rooms, meals and other tourist expenses. Plus the fuel and tie-down fees. And my NOT going there more than maybe 10 days (if that) in a year to make sure I don't come close to the limit. We fly up to Bar Harbor for hiking in Acadia, but don't want to get close to their limit.

For years there have been attempt to make ATC a User-Fee based service. Let's see, your IFR flight is 100 miles direct, but we're going to route you via XXX, so that will be 150 mile. $1 per mile, that will be $150 please.

That may work if you only go into non-towered fields. But odds are the state is getting N# from the Airport Ops at all the larger airports or even the tower if the Feds have any kind of info sharing deal with the State (which I wouldn't surprise me). And giving it a second thought, even at non-towered fields the FBO may be required to write down you N#, even if you don't give it to them. So now you're limited to airports with Self-Serve fuel.

@Mark89114 Luckily they said "may" owe, so hopefully you can show you were there less than 90 days. Regardless if you pay or not, I'd spend some time and draft a nice short letter to the Gov. and CC whomever is the Tourism person. Tell them how you USE TO like coming to their state, but do to their fee on top of what money you were putting into the economy, you're looking for a new destination. Even if you do keep going back, it may get someone thinking about the fee. Won't do any good to send it to the tax people or with the payment. They just push the papers that others tell them to. Good Luck!

States can charge any kind of "Use" fee they want if you are in their state. No different from those states that require you to get a boat license or pay a "Use" fee if you come into their state.

Has anybody taken Mooney to grass strips in Idaho?
PeteMc replied to kajo's topic in General Mooney Talk
One word: InReach More specifically, Garmin InReach (formerly DeLorme) I guess especially if you fly into the back country, but great to have with you on any flight. Battery is incredible and I just turn it on before every flight and keep it where it's handy and won't get tossed around. I have the Explorer, but they also have a great little one that works just as well. Originally got mine for hiking in northern ID when I either go alone or we are WAY far away from anything (take my handheld too), but almost immediately started turning it on for every flight. You can connect them to your phone or tablet and don't have to worry about trying to do anything on the device itself - other than push the SOS button if necessary which is the easiest way. In the plane I can set off the SOS from my iPad, but if there's time, I'd prob. push the button and clip it to myself. Few different packages available, but I just have the basic for ~$14/mo. I can send a couple of included texts if I'm out hiking on my own, but otherwise it's more for that "what if" you're talking about. Seriously take a look if you fly into OR OVER remote places on your own. -

Yep, great little airport that has always been well maintained. Were you camping? -

I get the issues with Garmin. But the GTN 750 or 650 is a good box. If you have the panel space and the extra $$, I'd go with the 750. If not, go for the 650 which is basically the size of the KNS80. If the FD and/or HSI are starting to give you issues. Consider the GI 275. Or I've got used ones that were working when removed. (1980 K and had a very similar panel.) -

@geoffb Have you been into Cavanaugh Bay recently? Those trees by the lake sure have gown since I last flew in there years ago. Luckily the parking lot gives you a good 1/2 wingspan on each side. But I'm guessing the view on final is a lot different than it used to be. -
Isn't there a menu setting for the minimum it will dim. Granted, not something you want to deal with on downwind, but you should be able to adjust it for the future.

Actually, scroll back a few messages. 66S was mentioned!! -
I'll second what @PT20J said. Next time the plane is either at an avionics shop or anywhere else the 345 can be taken out, I'd send it to an avionics shop for a quick bench test.

Not in ID, but on the Grass Strip topic... Has anyone been into Basin Harbor, VT (B06) recently? Haven't been there recently, but that is a grass strip I would take a Mooney into. At least I'm assuming it's still in great shape. The runway is (was?) maintained by the golf course grounds crew. -
One option for the water is to keep an old soda bottle or use a spray bottle and fill it up with filtered water from home (assuming you have one on the tap or in the refrigerator).

M20K Tanks are starting to weep (top and bottom)
PeteMc replied to Lakesidelo's topic in General Mooney Talk
How long ago was the name change? And it is basically the same tank stripping and resealing place, correct? I think I was there right after Bruce sold and there were still some ties with the shop and Paul breaking off the wing resealing to it's own business. Do you know if he also now runs the regular maintenance shop too? -
I don't know much about it either. But a couple of places seem to indicate not to use them on plexiglass, plastics, or fiberglass. Here's one link, but I found others: https://www.newdirectionsaromatics.com/blog/products/all-about-dlimonene.html I figure there are so many other things that are out there that are made for plexi, including WATER, that it's just not worth using it.
