Garmin does not post Firmware versions on their public website. They expect you to waste the time of your avionics guy to look up and tell you if a new FW version has been released. If I were an avionics vendor for Garmin, this would be on my list every time they I talked to my contact with Garmin. Really, Really dumb way to provide generic info that should be available to all their installers as well as all their customers. (I know Garmin is big... but I don't think that the issue here. Seems like they've got some people in positions of power that just don't have a clue.)

LED Replacement for Whelen Model #70303 Light
PeteMc replied to StevenL757's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
I talked to Whelen a few weeks ago they told me a LED replacement was on the boards. Obviously not going to tell me if there's a development team assigned, etc. etc., but I do believe they are going to make the LED option. My guesstimate from the conversation is a year, but possibly much sooner pending how they allocate their resources. So lets hope there's a little block in their production schedule that this project fits right into and they do it a lot sooner. -
Per item??? I can see them charging for their time. But if it takes them an hour to simultaneously update 5 boxes, I'm not sure why you think it would be okay to charge 5 hours.

I have some relatives, friends and a acquaintances that used to try and stay anonymous. So I'm just curious if you really think it's working? Not trying to be argumentative or judging, just curious why you think you are anonymous and more the fact that you'd take the risk by not taking the vaccine because of it? I'd question (okay, sometimes rag on them over a beer) if they really thought they were anonymous... Some still think they are, others have stopped trying due to the reality-of-things (yea, I'm coining IOT). My usual questions if they thought it worked was to ask if they paid taxes, worked for a company or were paid by companies, had bank accounts, had/used credit/debit cards, had any kind of EZPass or sticker on their car, owned a car, etc., etc., etc. Oh... And do you post in public forums?... If I looked you up in one of my search accounts would I find all the addresses you've lived at?... This is usually when the reality sunk in. I'm not opposed to your trying to stay anonymous and wouldn't mind it myself. But unless you're off the grid, which would mean you couldn't be here, I contend that as much as you'd like to be, you're really not anonymous. And "big brother" is not so much the Gov. as it is Big Business trying to customize ads for you. (Luckily they make browsers and VPNs to help with that...) So I'd say go for the vaccine. They already know who you are, so stir the pot a bit and do something "they" are not expecting you to do!

GTN 750 Terrain Warning not working
PeteMc replied to Costa Leite's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
And is there any terrain near by? My screen would be back at 5080 flying around my airport. -
I don't do updates via Pilot and the 510. But when I do them via the SD Card, the Database Button appears right after power up. So don't push any buttons when you first turn on the 650 and see if "Database" shows up after it recognized there is an update available. Might take a few seconds since the iPad needs to connect to the 650 and then they need to compare databases.

Interior refurb ideas please....
PeteMc replied to Htmlkid's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
So what do people think the "best seats" are that are out there??? (Guess I better limit the comments to 20 words or less!!! ) Years ago on my first X-US I was pretty stiff after the first day (we usually take at least 2-4 days to stop at places along the way). The next year I had Tempur-Pedic seat cushions and lumbar cushions for our backs. It made a HUGE difference. So I'm trying to figure out if I should redo ours (orig. 1980 K) with memory foam, look at Oregon Aeros (which I haven't looked at in years) or if there is someone else out there now? -
Mooney Down Warwick, NY (N72) 04-28-21
PeteMc replied to PeteMc's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
Sometimes things don't show up right away on the JPI. My one emergency landing did not show anything on the JPI, or any of the other instruments, until well after it was decided we were landing NOW. So even if he did have a JPI and it was in his scan, still may not have told him anything. AND... Has anyone heard any more real details? Spoke to a friend that lives in Warwick and there are lots of "facts" floating around from non pilots. Just curious if anyone has learned more from the Pilot or anyone at the airport that has real facts/knowledge. Maybe a potential Learning Experience for us? And he better damn well log that LANDING! Did a great job and DID walk away from it. ADDED: One correction. My JPI didn't show anything at first. After I did a few more scans of everything it did show the dead cylinder, but by then the decision was already made to land. So I didn't mean to imply that the JPI does not give good info. But it can only show you what the sensors tell it. And sometimes there's a lag. -
GTN 750 Terrain Warning not working
PeteMc replied to Costa Leite's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
So when flying around you should see black or maybe some yellow. If you get closer to terrain (mountain tops) it should show red. But you will not hear or see any warnings. If you get really close to something OR the GTN calculates that you're closing on terrain, it will give you a screen warning and if connect to your audio panel, you'll get an audio warning too. Closing in on terrain can be straight at something, not climbing fast enough (which is really straight into something) or descending. HOWEVER, if you're near an airport, you will not get the alerts as you descend to land. (Wouldn't that be a pain!) So in my example, if you can descend at a pretty good rate (you don't need to go out of the normal envelope), you should get a warning. And KNOW the area so there are no tower wires, etc. -
I'm pretty sure it's one-to-one, it needs to be connected to the primary Nav/GPS source.

GTN 750 Terrain Warning not working
PeteMc replied to Costa Leite's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Is there anyplace you can legally fly low? We have a route along the shoreline just south of JFK under the CBA at or below 500ft. When I first start dropping down I'm still far enough away from JFK that I will get a "TERRAIN" warning. As you get closer to JFK it goes away because the GTN recognized I'm near an airport. So if you can drop down below 500ft someplace AWAY from an airport, you should get the warning. Don't dive down, but descend at least at 500+ FPM, as you get down there the alerts should start going off. Also, if you fly with ForeFlight or Garmin Pilot and have gotten the warning on your iPad, but not on the GTN, then there is a problem. -
Mooney Down Warwick, NY (N72) 04-28-21
PeteMc replied to PeteMc's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
@Marauder Not sure what your map is showing, that's not where the plane went down. Much further south by Whickham Lake @ N72. The FlightAware track appears to only be a portion of the flight. -
Mooney Down Warwick, NY (N72) 04-28-21
PeteMc replied to PeteMc's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
I haven't heard anything more. But I have seen some pics from different angles. Looks like s/he ended up right on the edge of a pretty good sized field and came up just a little bit short or his/her intended emergency landing strip. -
Anyone know any details about the plane that went down today near N72?
-
Sounds like @StevenL757 has one that came out of a Mooney. But if his doesn't work out and you end up getting one of unknown origin, be sure to check the part number very closely. Had my pitch servo rebuild and my avionics guy was telling me that as it gets tougher to find the motors or parts, he's finding a fair number of people bringing their planes in to have the servos rebuilt, only to find they're the wrong part for the plane their flying. So he can't reinstall it.

Hmm... I'd go with typo, but would even consider they were hacked. Do they even still offer the KI-256 if someone wanted to buy one new? There are a lot of ways to test websites. You don't need to make the page public if you don't want to. Or you can have it on a separate site if you need people to review/test it.

I would agree with a steady crosswind. But when you're getting and then loosing strong gusts, I think all bets are off. Suddenly loosing 6-10+ kts of wind when trying to get the wing to stop flying is always a potential issue.
-
@JimBGetting back to the 45 degrees G35 for a minute... If you're not used to strong crosswinds and gusts up to 35kts, just remember if you're not happy, go around and try it again. I had one heck of a time the other day with the winds 20 something with G35. It took a lot of rudder to keep straight. All was good until I was a few feet above the runway and... the Gust stopped Gusting! Dropped and got a good bounce! It was a nice long runway but this was not a day I was going to try and save it with those gusts. Second time around I still had to work for it, but the landing was fine.

The ADS-B issue is not so much about if she did it or not. Her license was revoked because of the ADS-B issue and a reg that came in with the introduction of ADS-B. I believe she admitted flying under the bridge from the very beginning. The FAA refers to "people on the ground" so I'm guessing there is also a photo and/or recording of the event. But instead of getting a suspension, she got the full revocation of her certificate due to the ADS-B issue. Is the FAA trying to make an example? Who knows, but it sure wouldn't surprise me.

Need a *local* ferry pilot for a long-body mooney in/near northern NJ
PeteMc replied to rbp's topic in General Mooney Talk
Agreed. I know some people in NJ that also might fit the bill. But not know what it is, none of us can really reach out to contacts. Doesn't really matter if it medical and you need a CFI(I) with your or some other reason. But some more details would help. -
I wonder where the cross over point is in days for how much they WOULD have made if I visited the state and paid for hotel rooms, meals and other tourist expenses. Plus the fuel and tie-down fees. And my NOT going there more than maybe 10 days (if that) in a year to make sure I don't come close to the limit. We fly up to Bar Harbor for hiking in Acadia, but don't want to get close to their limit.
-
For years there have been attempt to make ATC a User-Fee based service. Let's see, your IFR flight is 100 miles direct, but we're going to route you via XXX, so that will be 150 mile. $1 per mile, that will be $150 please.
-
That may work if you only go into non-towered fields. But odds are the state is getting N# from the Airport Ops at all the larger airports or even the tower if the Feds have any kind of info sharing deal with the State (which I wouldn't surprise me). And giving it a second thought, even at non-towered fields the FBO may be required to write down you N#, even if you don't give it to them. So now you're limited to airports with Self-Serve fuel.
-
@Mark89114 Luckily they said "may" owe, so hopefully you can show you were there less than 90 days. Regardless if you pay or not, I'd spend some time and draft a nice short letter to the Gov. and CC whomever is the Tourism person. Tell them how you USE TO like coming to their state, but do to their fee on top of what money you were putting into the economy, you're looking for a new destination. Even if you do keep going back, it may get someone thinking about the fee. Won't do any good to send it to the tax people or with the payment. They just push the papers that others tell them to. Good Luck!
-
States can charge any kind of "Use" fee they want if you are in their state. No different from those states that require you to get a boat license or pay a "Use" fee if you come into their state.
