  1. I'd be concerned about how much resistance the petroleum jelly adds to the in line batteries. Sure people talk about using it for corrosion on car batteries. But there's a lot more amperage involved. And granted we're getting into the cooler months. But I'd also be concerned about where that PJ might be migrating to next summer when you're in having a bugger in 80-100 degree Wx. Apparently it does conduct electricity, so what happens when you start to get a film across the circuit board and then turn on your radio. Clean and dry is what is usually the recommendation I've always read in various manuals and gone by.
  2. Um... Not really. PLBs are connected to SARSAT which is an organized as a treaty-based, nonprofit, intergovernmental, humanitarian cooperative of 45 nations and agencies. The RCC you're referring to is not really any different that Garmin's IERCC. So you can reach out to a nonprofit, intergovermental cooperative or a center run by a corporation. I really don't think there would be any difference in response time. They both reach out to the LOCAL Search and Rescue teams be it Sheriff's Dept, Nat. Parks, local PD or possibly the Coast Guard if you're along the coast. Neither "center" you contact actually controls or deploys any rescue resources themselves. They just have a big, and probably the same, database. (If some sales guy told you there was a difference, s/he fed you a line...)
  3. I've flow with an inReach since back in the day when they first came our from DeLorme. PLBs are great, but the inReach is even better for hiking WAY AWAY from any kind of cell service in the NW. I've always liked having the texting capability of the inReach to relay what the emergency is or just sending a quick status to family. Currently have an Explorer+, but if I were to buy one just for flying, I'd look at their new(er) Mini.
  4. My old airliner type lifevests probably still work... But it's not worth the chance anymore. Since I haven't been doing much long x-country or over water flights, they've been sitting in a little plastic box in the baggage area for a while. (Probably will send them in for servicing, but they are old.) So, anyone what to chime in with their preferred choice is these days and why? (If your vests are old like mine, what would you buy now?) I've been looking at a couple of front runners, but also notice (like so many other things these days) there are some serious back-order dates.
  5. Is there a monthly cellular charge? Or does the purchase price include lifetime service?
  6. Wow a new factoid. I never knew the older models started with the year they were manufactured. Any idea when they stopped that?
  7. I don't have a G3X, but had looked into one. As you and others have said, there are some limitations with the internal VFR navigation. Everything I've *read* (again, no actual experience) says it's best to push all IFR flight plans to the GTN and just let it Cross-Fill to the G3X (in External mode). So you'd need to connect your iPad to the GTN with a FS510 or FS210. This way you go to the GTN that can interpret all the SID, STAR, Airway waypoints which are then Cross Filled to the G3X. Couple of comments I also ran across that I would probably follow if I had a G3X were: 1) Always run your FPs through the GTN even if VFR. This just solidifies familiarity with the process and mussel memory with the button pushing. 2) Forget the G3X has a Direct To button, ALWAYS use the GTN's Direct To button. If you do a D-> on the G3X, it does not create a START waypoint to send to the GTN. So the GTN ignores the FP change. If you do it on the GTN, it creates a Current Position waypoint, so it will Cross Fill to the G3X. 3) (Again) Send all FF or GPilot changes through the GTN so that it can interpret waypoints the G3X may not have in its internal DB.
  8. I fly and hike with an inReach. Besides texting (what they call Messaging), if something were to happen, once on the ground you are in immediate contact with their rescue center. You can immediately tell them your condition and needs. As for the Messaging, you have a limited number of free messages pending which plan you have. But the Preset Messages are free. NOTE: If someone replies to your Preset Msg, that counts towards your plan. So just tell family/friends that when you send an update message, they should not reply "K"...
  9. Have you reached out to Merlyn? Maybe sending your wastegate in to them as part of your Annual might me a consideration. I was actually in Spokane years ago and actually had them take a look at mine while I was there.
  10. @jetdriven As others have said, check your bottle of Simple Green and DO NOT use what is probably the ORIGINAL Simple Green on your plane, aluminum car wheels, etc., etc. Read the label. SG does make other products that are okay for aircraft and other metals and surfaces.
  11. No... All me. I just didn't read the full post.
  12. Ah... Not seeing the "For Sale" in the Topic or at the top of the post. I thought you were looking for a replacement. Missed the price at the end... Probably was looking at the pics by then.
  13. Since there are no specific measurements (antennae, windshield angle, side lengths, etc.), I'd just check with a boat cover/sail shop if you have one near by. If not, an outdoor awning shop should also be able to get the material. To create a cover like that you just need the material and the machine to put the pieces together and seams on all the edges. If you drew it out first with the over all measurements and the measurements for where you want the attach points (prob. rings of some sort) then they should be able to whip up a replacement pretty quickly.
  14. Congratz on getting some mileage in your logbook! So where are you planning your next XC to? Maybe up to the NW (it's not always smokey like it is now.)
  15. Not all items that are shipped go in containers. Did a video once on a container ship. The back under the bridge & crew section was full of various non container odd shaped items and a lot of cars. Don't remember if the ramp opening was wide enough, but you might get a Mooney in sideways. Actually a more realistic way might be to wrap it to protect it from the salt water, put it on a custom pallet and have them tie it down on top of everything. You'd really need to talk to a SHIPPING person that know about this stuff. Side Note: The Captain of the ship is a glider pilot that lives in Sweden. Went there a few years ago, but never had a chance to connect with him to go flying.
  16. Not sure that I agree that "GA owners"are seen as any great threat. Lead in any form has been on the list for YEARS (lead pipes/water, paint, auto gas, any number of other substances). And with good reason. You (we) hear about it all the time because we read the articles related to GA. But there is no question that lead will be gone from our fuel in the not so distant future. I'm going to assume it will be G100LL formula that people start producing. But maybe someone else will come out of the woodwork in the next few years with even a better option.
  17. Since 100LL is on borrowed time... I'm guessing it will be "boutique" for a little while and as it proves itself it will start to slowly expand. Then we'll here about a 100LL cutoff date for the environment and 100LL production will drop and the cost will go up. Then you'll see the expansion take off through all FBOs as 100LL becomes harder to get. And since those FBOs won't have to invest in any new equipment, it will be a no-brainer for them to just start filling their 100LL tanks with GAMI's no lead. How quickly will this change take place, that's the million dollar question. I'm pretty sure George will keep pushing their fuel and get more and more larger groups to buy in. And looking at that half full glass of no-lead.... One can only hope that the cost will drop at least a little bit once it's productions level has increased to replace 100LL. (I'm going to win the lottery today too!!)
  18. Sorry, didn't realize the file type had changed from .jpg. I edited my original post and just put the image (now a .jpg) in the post. (Thanks for pointing it out!!)
  19. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.... And the reason for my original post is that a number of Mooney owners have this older Non LED light and Whelen keeps saying they are interested in supplying a replacement. Air Venture is a good place to nail down the Execs when you want real answers. And I think they will do it eventually, just need to push them to get it into the pipeline.
  20. I think @Airways is referring to the FAA's approval of GAMI's unleaded fuel at OSH.
  21. For those of you at AirVenture... If you pass by one of the Whelen Booths (#488 & #1088), try and get an update on a LED replacement for the wingtip recognition light. And if they're designing it to be a direct replacement or if it will require a new mount Who knows, maybe they're even rolling it out at the show! Though the last time I talked to them they said maybe fall at the earliest.
  22. Not sure how Aspen works, but do you know if the "unlock" is tied to your unit or if it is generic? The SV was included in my original purchase. But I'd hate to buy it and find out it doesn't work.
  23. As the others have said, you will get a surge. Just a nature of the turbo spinning up. And remember, the whole point of the Merlyn is for the turbo to spin WAY DOWN if it is not needed. So you're getting it to spin up as you add power. I have a vernier throttle, so I just screw in my throttle vs. shoving it in. It takes me only a few seconds to get the power in, but it allows me to see/hear the surge and watch the MP as I near TO power. Also gets you into the prop gov. range as @N201MKTurbo mentioned. But if you're already basically doing this and are still having issues. Then it sounds like a leak or sticky plunger that is giving you issues. So time for a trip back to the mechanic.
  24. WHAT?!?!? You don't want to talk to any of us Mooney owners on the RIGHT COAST?! Welcome to the group!!
  25. We had a short body on our field sitting for years. Father died and the family apparently partially did not want to sell it because of the memories and partially because they really didn't know what to do. So the Estate kept paying the tie-down. Airport recently did a shuffle of the ramp giving a huge chunk to one of the FBOs for jets. Part of the process to relocate the planes from the lost tie-downs was to move out non airworthy planes. Not sure how they did it (fixed enough for a ferry permit, hauled away, etc.), but something like 8 planes were removed.
